AMD VEGA confirmed for 2017 H1

No idea sorry... that's why I added the ? It was explained by AMD that the numbers 10 & 11 are not an indicator of size, just which one came first (was the same for Polaris). Doing some googling it seems everyone is split about which is smaller.

I suppose the answer may become academic anyway.

If 'big' Vega is under 500mm2, like the GP102, then neither are the true 'big' cards of the generation.

Both companies would be able to make something larger still.

One of those ID's (687f) matches the OpenCL Benchmark Leak. So small Vega is confirmed as being in everything we have seen so far? Which sits between the 1080 and 1080Ti? I guess it might even match the 1080Ti by the time it releases.

Tends to suggest there maybe isn't a big and small Vega 10, 11 in the traditional sense. Making some assumptions here but it looks like they have a full product team for Vega 11 as well separate to 10.

I have felt all along that Vega 11 will be a further-down-the-line card that will come out some time later than Vega 10 and be a little different. Possibly more refined or updated. I have nothing to back this up but it's how I have assumed it would work.

This lineup will be Polaris at the bottom and middle end and Vega 10 at the high end. The next gen lineup (in 6-12 months) will be Polaris at the bottom, Vega 10 in the middle and Vega 11 at the top in my opinion.

Probably completely wrong but I wonder if Vega 11 is going to be a pipe cleaner leading to Navi.

I doubt it as remember there is also Vega 20 supposedly on 7nm. I still think there will be 2 different chips. Polaris is only a 230mm2 chip. This leaves plenty of size left for there to be 2 different chips assuming AMD make a big chip around the 500mm2 mark. You never know Vega might be that big a step forward they don't really need a huge chip to compete with Gp102.

Maybe so but I think they ought to be looking at getting in the lead for a while if they have the chips to do so now.
A few months with the fastest gpu would do the brand a lot of good,
The last time they managed to push ahead of Nvidia was with the 7970GHZ which held the crown for about 6 months before the original Titan took the crown with a massive performance leap.
Since then the 290x took the title from the Titan and 780 but it was immediately retaken after just 2 weeks with the Titan Black and the 780ti,
Today we have a similar situation where Nvidia have not used the full Pascal chip so they have the potential to do another Pascal Titan release if needed.
So rather than just match and compete with Nvidia's current hardware if they have the opportunity to push ahead I hope they do.

I was certainly under impression that Vega 10 was big and we would see performance a little above the 1080 and a little under the 1080Ti from all accounts which if it comes in at 25% cheaper is fine. Other than that then I feel AMD have missed the mark a little which is unfortunate as I am hoping to do an all AMD build early next year.

Can we all take a moment here to appreciate the fact that AMD have a working Linux driver for a card BEFORE it's launch, /sniff our boys all grown up.

The sad thing is AMD removed a working driver from a major OS release meaning some cards ceased working altogether (like win10 vs win8 issues maybe). This driver they are now releasing a year later is late not early really but apparently they wanted to do it all at once, maybe its a Vulkan thing I keep thinking that'll be a positive for the industry developing across multiple platforms. Nvidia is far ahead the easiest card to use on Linux, due to its use by Valve on their linux based machine

I am actually surprised anyone uses Linux for gaming.

People say the same about OS X, but plenty of people do. They love their work environment but also like some gaming.

Good thing Feral Interactive doing amazingly great ports for those operating systems. They do AAA hits, and all sorts of others. Just recently added Dawn of War 2 to Linux and OS X as well, probably in prep for DOW 3 coming soon.

They're currently working on Deus Ex Mankind Divided on Metal as well.

Based in London too, nice! Honestly I would happily move my gaming machine from Windows to Linux if the support was there, but obviously that's a bit of a chicken and egg problem. MS have repeatedly demonstrated that they are at best indifferent and worst actively hostile to PC gaming, so being free of Windows would be a great step forward and save everyone a bunch of license fees too.

Sterling was 1.6 to a dollar in Oct 2014 and its been falling ever since. It shouldnt be relevant but it is, its now closer to 1.2 so before comparing prices you may need to adjust your aim.
If you want a worse case scenario, 1.71 was peak Sterling worth 2014 and say 1.1 on some nasty news now, so thats like the old £200 price point turning into now a £300 category of cards. I do think Sterling finds its feet this year and wont goto 1.1 but in terms of purchasing power for 2017 the damage is already done. For Pi which is UK made then its not such a thing but this type of cutting edge tech in limited supply I think thats how it is.
Call it reverse depreciation, in that it makes your old card look far better then it normally would

Wasn't really intending to say that I expect to be able to get another x90 card for £199.99. Just saying that I usually wait for a deal! :) I will end up getting a 490/590 or whatever it ends up being. Hopefully £300 or so as you say.
