AMD VEGA confirmed for 2017 H1

In terms of gaming though, I expect Vega will be competitive, but it won't be blowing away the Titan Xp/1080ti/etc...

Have to agree, and I'm tempering my expectations somewhat. If it edges a 1080 and is slightly cheaper then I think that'll set AMD up well in the gaming market :)

(we all know how well AMD tech matures, so buyers can expect improvements over time)

Pretty much my expectations also, I would be happy with 1080 performance with Freesync at the right price

Im expecting big Vega to be in general close to the 1080 ti in performance. I dont think it will overtake it but instead be nipping at its heels at a much better price point. Now i may be reading to much into it but considering that AMD guy confirmed that it is AMDs plan to "knock nvidia down a peg" (linus's wording - LTT) i dont see this being a thing if they are only going after the 1080 and much less the 1070. I could have course be wrong and wish for more than can actually be delivered.

I agree, and I hope it is!! I think it'll be particularly strong in DX12 games, nipping at the Ti maybe :)

nVidia are just far too strong atm, and let's not forget that it's just with a Maxwell refresh!! Volta is gonna be something else

This leads me on to another mild concern of mine. I'm currently waiting for Vega after which I will get a card to power a 1440p Freesync monitor which i also need.

BUT... AMD don't seem to release cards at the high end all that often. Meaning a Freesync monitor which mostly ties me in to AMD will leave me potentially waiting a while for AMD to release newer cards. I don't upgrade GPU's that often say every 2-2.5 years depending on performance but if AMD leave it a long time between generations the wait could drag. Whilst Nvidia release new cards way more often.

Vega 20 is stated to be on 7nm at some point next year i think and Navi which is next gen is also stated to come out around the end of 2018 so you should be fine.

I wonder how big the market is at this time? A lot of people have upgraded to the 10 series over the past year who probably aren't going to want to side grade - only a performance jump will make people upgrade?

There will still be plenty who have not upgraded, then you have people who are waiting who won't buy nvidia, then you got people who have or want freesync or freesync 2. Finally, if AMD manage to improve price for performance, there will be a bunch of people who may finally upgrade to to say 1070/1080 performance for less money.

But yes, at this point Nvidia have already sold to a big chunk of people who would want such performance. But even as someone who has a GTX 1080, I will likely sell it and go Vega when I get a Freesync 2 monitor. Might even break and get Vega on release. But I would rather stick with my 1080 as adaptive v-sync/fastsync helps quite a bit on my current monitor and amd don't have them.

I recently bought a Freesync monitor but I'm not worried about it tying me down to AMD because it didn't have a premium price added for the sync feature and it seems the Freesync monitors do not care if it's an AMD card or an Nvidia card, They simply offer Freesync or they don't. In comparison G-sync monitors have an added cost which I've seen as high as 200+ pounds, I've also read several accounts of G-sync monitors playing up when used with AMD cards. That might only be certain models though so the one factor that really counts is the additional cost which is not there for Freesync.

Agreed, mine is running great with ULMB mode enabled and pretty damn stunning tbh!!

Anything less than better than 1080 performance for Vega would be a huge miss step for AMD imo, I have my fingers crossed. Just hurry up and release the thing already!

Amen
Also as someone who used a heavily overclocked gtx1080 with freesync monitor (2730z) for few months, ain't worth and went back to the overclocked nano.
the fps even if 40% less, are smoother compared to the NVidia card due to freesync.
while one of the games I play a lot, world of tanks, due to engine limitations, the difference was 90fps with freesync or 108fps without.

The more things change the more they stay the same

I imagine the 1080ti runs that monitor great. I'm looking forward to seeing the next gen ultrawides with Freesync2 and HDR etc. I imagine we'll need the next gen of cards to run ultrawide 4k though.

What would the exact resolution be? We have 2560x1080 for 1080p, 3440x1440 for 1440p, and presumable it'll be ????x2160 for 4k,

What ever it is it'll be a bugger to run and we'll probably be sat on our Vega & Pascal cards dreaming of Navi & Volta :D

It does, fantastically well tbh. It has the power to lock me at 75fps whilst pushing the detail up  (and running a single card means I don't have the latency issues of SLi, which I was becoming quite sensitive to lately)

As for UW 4k resolution, I thought mine was pretty much there? 3840x1600, like 4k but without the black bars (for movies at least!!) :D

think your right, if you have a 40" 4k and run it at 21.9 with black bars it works out 38" 3840x1600
