I'm very sceptical of that claim. Mentioned by whom?

I'm not sure who claimed that either but "5 Generational Leap" from Maxwell to Pascal...errrrrr I don't think so. As we all know Pascal was Maxwell on a 16nm process with higher clocks. It was designed to fill the gap that existed because Volta was taking longer to fulfill.

unless your "5 Generational Leap" means something else other than a leap of 5 generations, of course. Can you imagine where we will be in 5 Generations of Graphics cards....we will be cursing 4k because it's to blocky. LOL :p

I have not seen users saying NV are miles behind and i think people have missed the point, NV very likely has something to counter anything that AMD has next, but IF for whatever reason they dont, just having lots of money will not mean they can make a counter at a drop of a hat.

It doesn't really work like that. Development lead times are long, and reliant on things like memory, node processes, and chip manufacturing from other companies. You can't just go "Oh look, the competitor product looks fast, let's change X/Y/Z in our chip that we are launching next month". Or even six or twelve months away.

I'm sure both companies have faster better tech, but it's targeted a few years away when the other parts of the product and other necessary tech is due to be available.

Which is what i just said having lots of money does not mean you can make counters at a drop of a hat= because there are many other factors.

Realistically NVidia has shown their hand with the Titan XP, AMD will be able to use that as a baseline and extrapolate, just how far NVidia could push it if they needed too, ie: full size core, max clocks, voltage etc.

If AMD can bring us something that will best the above, then NVidia can start sweating a little, but to be honest, that is a big ask.

You misread my post. Read it again and it should make sense. Hint, note the word 'could'.

TBH,AMD needs a competitor for the GTX1080 priced under £500 - I am sure those cards will outsell any Titan X or GTX1080TI by a large margin.

ATM,anybody with a R9 290/R9 390 series card realistically will be buying a GTX1070 as an upgrade path.

What they need is a half decent card which can run games at qHD fine.

AMD always had better and cheaper card than the top of the range Nvidia. However not many around here bought it my friend.

290X, FuryX and the list goes on.

Well that all depends on how your defining better.

The FuryX was indeed better than the 980ti/TitanX in some regards, but then worse in others.

This is why I feel they should try and take baby steps first - if AMD could have a card which matches a GTX1080 for under £500,ie,the price of a GTX1070,that would be a decent upgrade path for the R9 290X/R9 390X owners.

In both cases amd had issues with those cards. The 290x with the now standard **** amd cooler that could barely handle the heat the gpu was pumping out, third party versions were better but thats not saying much. Then the furyx, basically no availability for weeks at a time overpriced due to the fabled "supply & demand" excuse retailers salivate at the prospect of, and problems with the pump that to this day is still hit or miss.

Anyone who bought a 290X/custom variant is now laughing, whle the likes of the GTX 980 fall behind in performance.

Well, lets be honest here. What they really need is to beat a 1080 with a card at 1070 prices. Now that would throw a spanner in the works. :p

Not really - sure the 290X betters some of the cards that used to be a fair bit faster, but its pretty long in the tooth now - hardly going to be laughing when you are increasingly going to have to turn settings down a bit or upgrade with newer games.
