AMD Vs. Intel

I think your looking at this back to front actually! ;)

The question you should be asking yourself is if the added expense your thinking of paying out can be "justified" for the extra performance it brings! :D

If your not gonna be running benchmarks and you won't notice the extra performance and your technical needs are met then why spend extra?

AMD® Athlon™ II X3 3.1GHz (£55)
AMD® AM3 880G (£50)

4GB DDR3 1600 (£60)
Used uBer GPU (£120)

====
£285.00 inc
====

What are you waiting for?

What's so special about the 8XX chipset over 7XX - wasn't it just for a line of chips they didn't bring out?
Would the motherboard I mentioned above be a better ideal?

Used has me worried as well :p

Nobody said there was anything "so special" about the 8xx chipset over the 7xx chipset? :D . . . although some of the newer 8xx feature the updated southbridge with the USB3.0/SataIII you don't need right now! ;) . . . the board I linked you is sub £50 notes, better IGP than the 760G (may come in handy?) and will smoke your socket 478 set-up!

Dunno what you mean about a line of chips that didn't come out?

Which one?

I haven't bought a new GPU since 2008 . . . never had a problem yet!

If you have the knack then your money just goes so much further buying a used GPU! . . . the e-slongers literally give their last gen GPU's away on members market . . . ripe for the picking!

Indeed, there are loads of great deals to be had with used GPUs on the MM - certianly worth checking out.

However, if you are set on getting a new GPU then I would look towards the ASUS GTX 460 768MB - in terms of bang-for-buck it is one of the best (The EVGA superclocked is also worth a look at the current price).

Is it always better to get a 1gig one though?

I think Big.Wayne has a thread about that :)

My take is that a stock 1GB version costs at least £20 more than the slightly overclocked, better cooler ASUS 768MB version. The performance difference between the cards at stock is not huge, and with factory overclocks it is reduced even further. The 1GB is a slightly faster card than the 768MB, but the performance increase does not match the price increase. If you can afford a 1GB GTX 460, then tbh you would be better off going for a 5850 for a bit more.

Buying from a reputable place like OcUK MM should be fine. Ebay is a different matter!
I guess its down to the individual . . . I've bought and sold hardware on ebay since 2003 and not yet had a problem . . . I'm not saying problems don't exist but with a bit of common sense and dealing with respectable traders with good feedback seems to have worked out well so far for me personally! ;)

No not really . . . we had a quite large debate about this recently here and although a lot of "vocal" power-users said anything less than 1GB is not suitable for 1920x1200 the actual facts paint a different picture! . . . . the 768MB GTX 460 looks like a great buy at sub £120! :)

M4A79XTD Evo I think the board was, Wayne.
And cpu reference was just a rumour I heard - £15 extra for the above board, worth it?

And 768mb GT460 was my choice new for this budget anyway :p
I'd love to snatch up a Hd6850 or 1gig model with warranty for similar price though - I'll keep my eyes peeled.

Reason i ask is that my nephew is after a 23" HD TFT and was wondering if the 1gig card would be the better one to go for?

This one?
My question to you is, what "value" does paying this extra £31 offer you . . . if your not going crossfire what "benefit" will you notice?

Yep, that one.
CrossFire certainly would be an option for me, and I can get it for £70 - more reasonable imo.
Cooling is supposed to be better, and ofc crossfire is a factor.

Is the i3 series a better choice than the AMD 640 guys? Looking for a mini itx to accomodate a 640.

Alistair, I feel the time is close when you finally get a new machine to replace the socket 478 that has served you well all these years! . . .

How much money do you have to spend right now? . . . and what kit have you got to sell? . . . What screen res do you game at and what GPU do you use atm?

but i3 has hyperthreading

jony wot r u saying this for? sure it wasent a factor in the other thread.

is it hyperthreading? we dont know the future so might as well get the gaming pc we need "now" than for the future.

all you do is quote specs and follow the crowd. you dont offer info or thoughts based on personal experience or logic. all you do is regurgitate wots already said or known and say 1 thing in 1 thread and say anothr in another thread.

im sick of all the brainwashed cowboys on here.
