AMD Working On Something “Crazy” For GDC

People are really weird, the only thing you have to go on is the developer said AMD are working on something crazy and that in hindsight it seems obvious but it's not been done yet.

First we already know about other xfire modes, in the past other modes were used they are just potentially more complicated and within DirectX there is really only realistic support for one type of multigpu mode. In no way is AFR crazy nor describable as in hindsight it should have been done ages ago... because it was done ages ago and we all know about it.

Same with the other thread, Nvidia say they will redefine gaming(marketing pap) but also say they've been working on it for 5 years........ so people think they'll launch the GM200. 5 years + launch a differently sized Maxwell part that won't beat 2x 980gtx's in performance(or even come close) don't mix, a different sized Maxwell, which is about a year old with the 750ti, isn't going to be redefining gaming either in any describable way.

Back on AMD, crazy and with hindsight should seem obvious would suggest you should be thinking outside the box, not WAY inside the box. Think, slotted memory upgrades for a GPU, a ssd port on the gpu for it's own direct cached access directly to game data for faster access, having the option to stick a 16gb stick of pci-e ssd directly accessed to the gpu. Those kind of things are both crazy and with hindsight could be seen as obvious, in relation to hardware anyway, in software, a bit harder to call. A way to push some of the driver load onto an iGPU to get stuff done faster, who knows.

+1

Yeah it's worth mentioning again that it was the CEO of Stardock who said this not AMD, also it's something crazy for 'E3' not 'GDC'.

Here's the real sauce >>>>>>>

At 45 mins.

They build 2 gpu on a single slot that shares the ram, what about a gpu that takes 2 slots but it doubles up everything? Sure it would look weird but with all the extra Pcb available they could surely add extra bits n bobs? Also could come up with sweet new cooling designs etc!

Yeah it would take up a lot of room and look weird but surely it would open up a lot of options for crazy hardware onboard it?

With AMD, you know it will be a good 12-18 months away at least :D

What makes you think this is new amd tech? It could be this developer, showcasing something crazy using the Mantle API and that's the reason amd is talked about..

Didn't people already correct you this isn't amd saying something is coming?

hahaha, you funny you make I laugh :D

I believe it is to do with the New mantle tech demo they will be showcasing, the one that is supposed to blow what was done with star swarm away. (which is still running a simple implementation of mantle to showcase the improvements of mantle over dx11.)

Someone mentioned GPU's with upgradable ram, this was done years ago. :P

the poor DX11 performance on Star swarm is also to show the difference between not having optimised DX11 drivers, which is needed for every major game title and the improvements in mantle, where optimisation is done in the game engine.

but of course, nvidia had to massively optimise and rewrite large parts of their DX11 stack to improve performance in star swarm, to try to downplay mantle and low level api's, but then are contradicted when the 980 has a large performance boost with DX12.

stuff about star swarm is mentioned in the article. http://wccftech.com/amd-working-crazy-gdc/

Ok lots of misinformation in this thread. ;)

Brad Wardel says they will be showing something at GDC, then it is the interviewer that says "I really wish we could go to GDC I think we may be going to E3 though, to which Brad replies we'll be there too.

Then brad says "AMD has something crazy their working on."

Well you can hear it for yourself with this trimmed 2 minute clip of just the relevant part of the original interview.

As you can hear it is just as the wccftech article and Greg posted and not as has been suggested, only at E3, and not AMD showing something off.
