Still 3+ months away aren't we. No idea why I keep checking this thread :p
Its the time where rumors and excitement and hype train starts.
Why should they skip the 4000 series name?
to bring APU and CPU numbering on same page before switching to AM5.
So far APU was numbered one generation higher. But Zen3 APU would be then sharing model numbers with Zen4 AM5 processors, which creates confusion, because they need different motherboards, sockets, ram, everything.

They've already started using it for Zen 2 based APUs, which I think confuses the issue - the generations have been split weirdly.

The 3700U is a Zen+ part, the 3700X is Zen 2. The 4800H is Zen 2 ... why not move to 5xxx for Zen 3 and try to keep it consistent?

But they did that on purpose. The APUs are a monolithic design so they don't have the benefit of the chiplets low production cost. So they're a generation behind so they're released when the process is mature.

The APUs will always sound like an old product if the numbers are permanently behind which will be bad for marketing.

But then they make the new flagship desktop/workstation chips sound like an old product.

Perhaps the best would be for each one to advance the number - Renoir takes 4xxx, Zen 3 desktop chips take 5xxx, Zen3 APUs the 6 series, Zen 4 desktop chips take 7 etc etc. Mixing them makes it a little weird, IMHO.
