AMD Zen 3 (5000 Series), rumored 17% IPC gain.

Ah yes, i see that at the bottom, after showing charts with Zen 3 chips beating Intel by 20% using a 3090 he's managed to get them at exactly the same level as Intel again in the review, its like he responded to the criticism of his reviews being so different to everyone else he's found a way to justify his original 2080TI results with the 3090.

Look at the overall review results. 3300X, a 4 core 4Ghz CPU vs a 5950X at 4.9Ghz scoring 100% with at least 20% higher gaming IPC over 20% higher clocks, over 20% higher IPC 12 more cores, 7% faster.

Something seriously wrong with TPU.
Agree something is off.. and should be using new hardware to test new hardware not last gen stuff, the idea is to get a real world use from last gen cpu to this gen, but with this gen GPUS.. I don't get him, I use to like his reviews until his funny reviews recently and I feel some are sponsored reviews if you know what I mean.

I'm also starting to have issues with hardware unboxed too.. his reviews are humm very one sided sometimes too and very manufacturer based results recently too. A lot of silliness going on by a lot of reviewers and especially the youtubers .

I don't want to be that guy but Intel will be offering big money to hold AMD down in reviews, we know of several sites that are on Intel's payroll, the vast majority of reviewers quite obviously aren't in Intel's pocket but there is always one who likes the money more than their integrity.

Exactly and seems to be more of them now favoring certain manufactures of products to the point they add more negatives to a review deliberately while reality is it's a better product than ones tested before and even their testing shows it but they keep doing the negative comments to imprint on the viewers on their video reviews or site reviews.. Good example HU as said above.. they are not playing nice if you read between the lines too and not fall for their fake we are fair when we review.

I like Hardware Unboxed, and his was not the kindest to Zen 3, ironically that was Steve Burke (Gamers Nexus)

Steve (the other Steve) HU Steve is a smart guy too, several times he's picked up on shenanigans and dissected it, most recently Digital Foundries Nvidia sponsored Ampere review.

Am I the only one that saw DF openly disclose that Nvidia picked the games?

Nividia...they picked the games...and DF told everyone.

That's not what i'm talking about, the used settings in Doom Eternal that pushed the 2080 over the VRam limit which cause its performance to reduce drastically and then used that result to justify the 2X performance claim for the 3080 over the 2080, in reality using setting that don't overflow the 2080 VRam the 3080 was not even close to 2X the 2080.

We have a thread, about a gazillion pages long, questioning if 10gb is enough vram for the 3080. Had DF used settings that coddled the 8gb buffer on the 2080, people would have accused them of protecting the 3080 from the 2080Ti's 11gb vram. (Another card that was put up against the 3080 in that video.)

Yeah, and that's not working out too well on the 3080 - which comes as no surprise at all to anyone.
There are always trade-offs of course. Less RT performance, but more VRAM for example. This bit from the GN review makes me very interested in seeing how that 10GB will hold up at 4K going forwards:

A complete mess on the 3080, but smooth as butter on the 6800 XT.

Digital Foundry didn't do an "Nvidia sponsored Ampere review"

They revealed the card, and yes they got Doom Eternal wrong due to the settings, but they acknowledged that in their actual non-sponsored review.

Reveal:

Review

 It wasn't a reveal. The Reveal was on stage with Jensen. It was an early sponsored review released by Nvidia and DF to support the claims in the reveal.

Yes they did... I think you are maybe getting things a bit confused.

I think you need to look up the definition of a review. More importantly you need to learn how to recognise the difference between an infomercial (essentially an advert with additional information) and a review.

The first DF video clearly wasn’t a review. It didn’t contain an opinion on the product or a recommendation to buy. It even said wait for full in depth reviews from a range of outlets.

I get the whole doom controversy but they clearly disclosed the games AND settings were defined by nvidia which is further evidence it isn’t a review.

Same goes for Linus sponsored 8k piece.

The TLDR is just because someone does a video about it doesn’t mean it’s a review. The term review has a specific definition and you learn to differentiate between a review and other content.

Are we really so anally focusing on the word 'review' here? I thought the main point being discussed was whether it was a sponsored video or not.

Yes because no one is denying they did a sponsored piece but the key issue is that it wasn’t a review which is what was claimed.

A review is meant to give an opinion or recommendation, the sponsored video was clearly an advert and it was clearly disclosed as such.

There is no such thing as a sponsored review. If it’s sponsored by someone linked to the product it’s a advert. That’s why all of the reputable people in this space do not give an opinion or a recommendation to buy/ignore in a sponsored video.

Using benchmarks picked by Nvidia, with no other testing done. That was the only way the 2x performance of a 2080 would stand up in very specific situations.

I think you should be a bit less patronising when your entire post was to try and nitpick definitions to avoid the purpose of the discussion.

So you believe the video to be an infomercial or an advert that didn't contain an opinion on the product featured? And it definitely wasn't produced to help people get a clear idea of the product before purchase with real world benchmarks? In your eyes.

There is no such thing as a sponsored review.
Simply not true. Neither is your premise that a review must contain a recommendation.

Using benchmarks picked by Nvidia, with no other testing done.
Well yes but I was hoping those facts weren't under debate. As the main explanation of this seems to be it wasn't a review so shouldn't be taken at face value, it was a infomercial/reveal/advert.

A review has to include an opinion otherwise it isn’t a review by definition. A review of a product will naturally include a recommendation to buy or not. If the reviewers opinion is that it’s terrible, ergo their recommendation is do not buy.

It’s literally the definition in the Cambridge English dictionary.

review verb (BOOK/FILM)
[ T ]
If critics review a book, play, film, etc. they write their opinion of it:
I only go to see films that are reviewed favourably.

There is no such thing as a ‘paid review’, if a review is paid it’s the opinion of the company and not the ‘reviewer’, therefore it isn’t a review and it’s an advert. It’s exactly why all these instgramers have got into trouble with the advertising standards agency. It’s also completely unethical and no one worth listening to will not give any opinion on sponsored/paid for content because it’s an advert.

I keep banging on about it because people clearly don’t know the difference between the two. You only have to look in the comment section of any sponsored video about anything, it will be full of positive comments about it being a great review when the video didn’t include any opinion, was clearly an advert and most are even disclosed as such.

Where a person just shows/unboxes the product, shows it’s features or runs through some marketing materials is not a review.

Just got shipping notification that my 5900X is arriving today (not from OcUK).

Given how bloody awful these launches have been I'm expecting the postie to snap it in half or something...
