A friend has asked me about a new GPU, he has his eye on a 280x from his local store which I understand he can get for a very good price (£145), but he has asked me about the 3D usage and compatibility.

I don't know the answer so I thought best to ask you guys.

According to the AMD website the old 7970 supports AMD HD3D technology, but on the same AMD website the newer 280X ( which of course it actually the same chip) doesn't list HD3D technology as supported.

Is it really the case that AMD no longer support this or just that they have omitted it from their website.

Can someone with a 280x actually check that the newest drivers support HD3D technology. thank you.

(and yes I know if you want 3D your probably better off going for Nvidia as I don't know if you can even get a 3D non 3dvision monitor, even though his existing monitor might be ok, I'll have to check.

AMD have nothing to do with 3D really, never have, the name is kinda worthless :p.

You'd use Tridef (As always) for 3D. AMD as far as I'm aware have never done 3D through their own software.

Really?

Well I'll be damned. Thanks for pointing that out, you've just saved me potentially weeks of head banging and cursing :p

Yeah, 3D applications :p

Literally, 3D with an AMD card has no support from AMD really (Although, unlike Nvidia, they give full ability for Tridef to use as intended. Whereas Nvidia is locked to SBS on Tridef)

Apparently if you want 3D on AMD you have to buy;

A set of glasses
An emitter
Tridef
A 120hz monitor

And then hope you can get them all working together
The tridef website is probably the best place to start

AMD themselves dont have a 3D solution and there arent any PC monitors with built in emitters / glasses either

I can get 3D on my Panasonic TV using an AMD card (295x2) on games like Hitman: Absolution, Tomb Raider, Doom 3: BFG edition and Deus Ex. They have 3D options on the menu/config screens.

There are some that have been available.
You can't currently buy such a monitor from Overclockers.

The Samsung 700D has the emitter inbuilt and came with the glasses.

120HZ 1080p Active 3D.

I sold mine for 100 quid to my brothers mate. Regret it massively.

I bought one as well and still own it :)

It came with a free version of tridef 3d as well.

I think it was Roy Taylor who said "3D is dead and nobody wants it", so for 3D, I personally would look to someone who does support it and does a good job at it.

Tridef does a good job at it, they deserve a lot of credit. AMD don't give any real support, but at least they don't block support (Nvidia don't allow the direct stereo 3D with Tridef ; The one you actually want to use) Nvidia have a very tight (Albeit supported) 3D solution. For better or for worse.
