American Beer

I've only tried a couple of American beers (Coors and Budweiser are the only ones that spring to mind) and they were terrible. Are there any decent American beers (lager, ale or stout)?

Tried some ales from these guys when I was in New York a few years ago. Nice enough: http://www.brooklynbrewery.com/

Edit: I think it was the Pale Ale and the Lager I had. They do a brown ale too. The larger had much more flavour than the big name american lagers. It was much more like a continental European beer.

Samuel Adams is one of the better easily available options. But you should also be able to get Miller and Rolling Rock without too much trouble - neither are particularly worth it, I just mention them for completeness.

Is there any particular reason you want an American beer? If you give an idea of your general taste then I'm sure someone will be able to offer you a variety of more local options.

//edit Michelob is another American option, it wasn't terrible from what I remember of it.

I don't mind Coors, especially if they have the proper Coors 'ice' machine - nice on a hot summers day (if they don't serve a decent cider, of course).

Not a huge fan of Budweiser, but Budvar's great.

Coors and Bud are ****water.

I like Michelob and Sam Adams...those are the only 2 I can think of that are really popular and you can find it almost any supermarket in the states.

Otherwise I would buy canadian stuff like Labatt Blue. Of course stuff that comes from microbreweries or local stuff should not be overlooked.

Sierra Nevada make some damned good beer but I'm not sure you'll find them outside of the west coast.

Actually there are some nice American beers.

I picked up the 12 pack Michelob Wheat beer Sampler pack in Walmart when I was over there last month (about $12 for 12 bottles) - It was a selection box of 4 types of their wheat wheat beers and they were really tasty...and a bargain. Not too sure where you can get them here though - Sainsburys might do two of the types that were in the selection box I had - but I'm sure they will be a lot more than $1, or 66p a bottle in our money.
