AMG GT R - Der Tag

Thanks all. Small blip, got a suspension malfunction message. Car feels fine and drives fine and suspect sensor. Booked in local Merc on 15th but still driving it. Tank of fuel 4 now.

It still has the new warranty so sure it’ll be fine. Certainly not broken and the dampers still respond to the different settings. Car has not been driven since August.

Car is booked in to Stafford Mercedes on the 15th to have the suspension malfunction message diagnosed. So far I have mixed views on how well Mercedes treats it's customers / prospective customers based on recent sales / service responses. Some good, some less good but I am going to put that down to current climate and lack of face time 'getting to know' the workshop / sales manager at my dealer.

Over 600 miles covered in 3 days driving around the local area and into posh Cheshire. Average fuel consumption is 17mpg, so not great but in line with what I expected. On a steady cruise at 60mph it was showing 32mpg and at 70mpg 29mpg but use the right pedal at anything more that pulling away speeds and it consume fuel like HMS Hood consumed coal at 30 knots. Gave it a wash yesterday and confirmed the wheels and bodywork are immaculate and the PPF has done its job of protecting things well.

The radiators are very exposed at the front of the car however, just like my old GT3 with no grills to protect them and I can seem them getting hammered so am going to explore options to add some grills to protect them, if possible.

V8's have always been the thirstiest of the thirstiest in my experience. My old RS4 was dire, my R8 with a V10 significantly better!

Wow. Nice congrats.

did you take a bath on the R8?
Not really as I kept it so long. 90k paid 45k returned. Over 4 years and 40k miles that’s decent. I could have lost that with many cars if I bought, garaged, never drove it and sold it. I’d have got low 50’s selling it privately I suspect but that would have come with pain I’m sure.

@Housey If you can pull yourself from driving it for 10minutes (hard ask, I know), can we have a little rev video <3
I did have a brief 45 seconds video of it being unloaded from the trailer, but it's not my finest work and knowing my finest work is dire you might imagine the sheer quality of this one.

Stunning :) enjoy

I did think about buying a GTS as an all rounder but decided to split into a dedicated work car and then get a weekend car
Yes I will remain with 2 cars. I did consider having just this one, but makes little sense really.

I have been chatting with people in the GTR owners group on FaceBook and learning all the time. My car doesn't have radiator covers at the front, they look really exposed and I am told Mercedes should fit these, FOC, on cars that do not have them as they started fitting them at some point in 2018. So will add that to the list of things.

I might have made this up but I’m sure there’s a similar story with the front brake ducts? I remember Tony of Gravelwood car sales had a mare with his when the ceramics completely died on track, turns out his brake ducts were missing or something? They became standard fit later on and on the Pro I think. Something to check out.
Rings a bell too. Need to try and find a GTR specialist I think as I am fairly sure the dealers will be useless with the car.

Some ownership updates.

The car still had a smidge of Mercedes new car warranty which runs to the end 27th April. I had been to the Mercedes Warranty renewal website and got quotes of £2760 for 1 year and £5600 for 2 years. That had surprised me as I expected it to be less and took to the FaceBook owners group who all told me that it was a toppy quote. So I picked up the phone and spoke to the warranty team who confirmed it was in fact £1360 for 1 year and £2660 for 2 years, with no excess. To me on a car like this that is epic value to just put 2 years extended warranty on the car from end of April.

The braking issue above can impact people who use cars hard on track. I tend to be hard on brakes not least as I left foot brake quite a bit on road and track when going quickly so going to look at getting the Pro cooling ducts fitted which resolves the issues and also the radiator protectors, which are fitted to the cars as standard from late 2018 it seems.

Are you aware of the exclusions for the extended warranty? I did a quick Google yesterday and went to the extended warranty website. I was surprised by such an extensive list that leaves little to the imagination about what actually is covered.

Edit: Although it was a very quick look and I could be entirely wrong.
It is little different to most warranties. It is the big bills I wanted covered, mechanical and electrical items. My R8 was no different, but come new gearbox time Audi got the £23K bill, not me.
