C64. The other two were badly made (I assume that those people waxing nostalgic over the Spectrum keyboard never had to actually use one) and essentially pretty poor. The C64 wasn't without its faults, but was still the best of the three.

Replaced the keyboard membrane (Speccy) in mine a few times back in the day, other than that I found them to be pretty solid.

Having owned all three at one point, I'd say it's a toss up between the C64 and the CPC - The C64 had an awesome sound chip, however, the CPC was much easier to program for, had lots of handy peripherals available such as Multiface 2, crashed much less and I had a colour monitor so the display was nice and sharp - none of this fuzzy RF cable nonsense!

Cybernoid 2, Gryzor and Gauntlet were a few great examples of CPC gaming. Last Ninja 2, R-Type and IK+ were much better on C64. Like I say, 50/50 to me, depending on what you're doing with it.

The extra colours on the CPC were very welcome over the spectrum tbh although I had many happy hours with my ZX :)

Loving how the poll reflects those happy times of my childhood, arguing with my mates over which was better....it was always a pretty even match :)

Only ever had a Spectrum myself. The C64 crowd always seemed a little defensive to me - like they always had to justify how good their C64 was and why it was so much better than the plucky little Spectrum. Speccy owners were a more happy-go-lucky bunch.

If anybody disagrees I'll meet you in the playground at morning break and we'll settle this once and for all. And remember to bring your sticker swaps!

I had both a Speccy and and a C64. I remember writting a game for the spectrum where letters fell from the sky and you had to catch them in a net in the correct order to make the word at the bottom of the screen. I was so happy with myself. For that reason it's the Spectrum for me.

Haha there were stand up rows at secondary school over SNES vs Megadrive! :D :D :D

I had a Spectrum as a young child and loved it but I guess if it was me buying one back in the day I would have gone for a C64.

hardware wise , the C64 was head and shoulders above the rest , due to having
custom designed support chips

With that being said the Z80 CPU in the speccy was a pretty good cpu

I had a Spectrum
I had a Commodore 128 which I only ever used in C64 mode.
I didn't (and I still don't) know anyone who had an Amstrad.

Without question, gaming on the C64 was a superior experience. You had hardware sprites, and of course the still epic SID sound chip.

There were games that were better on the Speccy, but they were few.

I loved it back in the 80s and early 90s when all of your mates down the road had different computers, and the odd person may have had a Megadrive.

Personally, I owned (and still own) a Beeb, so I'm biased to that. Out of my mates' computers though, I liked the Amstrad CPC464 the most. Then later on, it was all about the Amiga 1200.

Legendary loading music for the c64

speccy had worse graphics, worse sound, all it had going for it was Jetpack and Tranzam :p

had a c16 then a 128 speccky, then a c64 with a 1541 disk drive and a action reset cart.

kids these days dont know the power of a poke. POKE 53280,1

I always pull this out when i talk about the C64 and just how insanely good the SID chip was.

\Thread to be honest as i haven't heard any other 8-bit anything come even close! (post if you dare!)

Thanks for posting this! I was 16 or 17 years of age when I composed it. I prepared all the samples in a day and right after I went "clubbing" and got home pretty "drunk", but very inspired, after a lovely night dancing away with my gf. Then I sat down in front of my good old C64 and composed the tune (in assembler) in one session of 6/7 hours. Very pleased with the result! The (complete) Turbo Outrun music won the 1989 PCW Show "Best Music on 8 bit Computers" award! Yay! //JT

That's right, he did it after a night of clubbing and drunk off his ****
