An/A [number]

A hero, people use an 'ero supposedly because they drop the H.

To be honest, either is acceptable in everyday use, but it should be written A hero. (afaik!)

So what about two? An two? Nay, nay and thrice nay, plain and simple it just sounds wrong.

In fact, more to the point why do you want to put "a" or "an" in front of most numbers? You would say "I have two parakeets/Toblerones/wheels" etc not "I have an two of them". The main plausible reason I can think of where you'd use "a" or "an" with a number is on die and you usually only need count up to twelve there.
I'll give you another one, how do you describe a someone/something by their age :p

A one year old
...
an eight year old
a nine year old..
...
an eighteen year old
...
an eighty year old

etc :D

I need an 'ero, I'm holding out for an 'ero till the mornings light
:D Brilliant!

Another similar word is historic. Was it 'an historic vistory' or 'a historic victory'. Should really be 'a', but even BBC news said 'an' on the day of the last General Election result.

It will sort of depend how you say it - if you're being idle and put little emphasis, 'an' will do as you'll say 'istoric'. If you're emphasising the word 'historic', you will pronounce the 'h'.

Technically it should be 'a historic' as the 'h' is not silent.

This thread is hilarious, with all the guys who doesn't afraid of anything talking of 'an hero' and then the replies of 'well actually I think you'll find if you look at the more common pronunciation of 'hero' that in fact...' :D

Here is a box of plastic number for house signs.
I'll get some out for you.
Here's a one, here's an eight. Now you can make eighteen or eighty-one!
Some are already stuck together, here is a twenty-two.
Simon

I hadn't actually thought of that, it isn't a common occurrence for me but it's a good example.

True enough as well, I usually say "Jon is 25" when giving a persons age but that is correct too.

I think I prefer the French way though "j'ai vingt-cinq ans" - I have 25 years. The weirdos. :D

lol @ people not getting the 'an hero' meme

http://www.encyclopediadramatica.com/Mitchell_Henderson

Mitchell Henderson (died April 20, 2006) killed himself over losing an iPod, listening to Morrissey and getting bullied for being a wimpy white kid. Mitchell's parents set up a tribute MySpace page for their dead son, which a lucky /b/tard happened to stumble upon and forward to the rest of the collective. In the wake of Mitch's death were hundreds of misspelled comments from his supposed friends calling him "an Hero", a phrase which quickly caught on with the invading anons and has since become a term for a person that causes a lollercoaster via suicide.

Wow, didn't realize the amount of drama this could cause... -.-

Seems pretty 50/50, maybe it just depends on your pronunciation of 'hero'....
