An all encompassing Steam FAQ thread

Contrary to the recommendations here I'd keep Steam installed on the SSD and just symlink the steamapps folder from the HDD.

Of course, when you want a game to load from the SSD you end up with a second hop but I still find it works just a little bit better.

As you've said, that's only useful for when you're initially installing the game. Doesn't really help when you have a game on your HDD that you want on the SSD.

or you could create a new folder in the other hard drive, then move the game folder there, then associate the folder to the steam library and steam should pick it up.

"Should". Steam requires the folder be empty before you associate it as a second install location from my experience.

Steam - Adding Game Codes

I can find the option to "activate game code on steam" but I am trying to find out is there a way to add a game code without activating it and just have it sit in my inventory so I can gift it if required?

Thanks in advance :)

short answer ..no

you have to sit on a code .. if it has a time limit your stuffed.

you buy a game from a site .. they send code .. you either activate it or keep it or send it to someone else.

you cant actiavate and keep it safe

Steam limiting concurrent downloads to one?

Having just booted up steam for the first time in weeks and installing the latest update I find that I can only download one item at a time. All others are listed "In Queue".

Is this a lovely new unwanted feature or am I missing something?

Pain in the bum when I want to download Ghosts multiplayer and single player.

Done the standard reboot/ reinstall stuff to no avail. Any ideas?

Or is it just down to the time of year and sale that I`m being forced back to the stone age download speed and concurrent downloads? :D

They changed the download system around June IIRC - it now uses say 10 connections to download 1 item rather than 1 connection per item. (They claim it means you download one item faster and/or less limited by an individual source - its not torrent style though).

Personally I've always got a constant 9.25MB/s since they've done it compared to a more variable download rate before so aslong as that continues I'm not gonna complain too much.

I think the number/speed of downloads depends on the traffic Steam are experiencing. I think they are currently giving away LfD2 so I expect the servers are getting hammered and have thus limited people to a single download.

Well you should easily be maxing out your connection so one steam game downloading at a time shouldn't really be a problem. If it was slow yesterday there are many reason for this but basically the servers were hammered and it was Xmas.

However you're going to find a lot of us on here don't mind if we can only download 1 game at a time. Because after all it's a game and we can only play one at a time anyway. You can set individual games to allow background downloading in the Steam options of individual games.
