Analogue Pocket

Any reason to get a pocket analogue over something like a PSP Go? The Go can perfectly emulate most if not all PSX games (plus many other systems)

Erm, so to play Nintendo and Sega games mostly and to play it not from an emulator but how it was originally. The screen is also the same scale as the original gameboy but higher res.. The original Gameboy is 160 pixels across, this is 1600. So there is no stretching of the image.

From what I understand FPGA Emulation is considerd 'cycle accurate' emulation. You can expect to play games how they originally were on the Game Boy. They essentially act as the original hardware. As Raymond pointed out the Pocket has a high res but same scale screen. It lt looks amazing in person.

Personally the emulation on the Pocket has been slightly disappointing since launch, in my opinion. Issues around Everdrive 7x not working for a lot of users, due to voltage used by the Pocket. Few noticable glitches with spirtes etc. Nothing game breaking and I have a work around but certainly isn't hardware accurate.

No doubt Analogue will iron out some bugs and fix the ED issue over time with future firmware updates. Definitely not a bad thing to wait over the early paid beta testers!

The pocket supports savestates, which is quite cool and easy to use. The ability to dock and play games on your TV is also a great feature, although an additional cost.

There has been talk about an additional FPGA on the pocket which can be used and programmed. Hopefully we will see other systems, such as the 16bit era. Doubt it would allow for PS1 games though.

Emulation over the PSP is completely different from FPGA emulation. If you're happy with existing set up, then no need. More of an 'enthusiast' product.

Thanks both.
I see the Analogue also support original cartridges. If there are issues around using an Everdrive / similar product this is pretty bad.
I have a number of Megadrive cartridges and other console games but the Mega Everdrive x7 I have is fantastic. No more blowing on cartridges to get them working or them not working at all, simply use the Everdrive and no need to switch cartridges or blow on them again... I sort of miss blowing on games to get them working! :D

edit - I guess you could say enthusiasts want no emulation and exactly how it was originnally. Sometimes though originally it was rubbish! E.g. Cartridges / floppy disk and prone to wearing out

I'd imagine Analogue will fix it at some point but they've been quiet on the matter. Krikzz has solved for new revisions of 7X. Annoyingly I bought the 7X in advance of the Pocket coming out, hence why I am unhappy lol.

I have the carts I want to play - Zelda and Pokemon games but the batteries are dead so saving will be an issue. I wish I had the tools and soldering skills to replace them.

Before I got a Mega SD flash cart for my Analogue Mega SG, I jail broke it, and had all Mega Drive and Master System games on an SD cart plugged directly into the machine. Have done the same to my Analogue Nt Mini and Super NT, hopefully a jailbreak firmware comes for the Pocket soon, I bought an X5 mini everdrive for it, and haven't had any problems playing the games that I want on it.

I've got an X5 mini as well, works perfectly. I'm mostly interested in a couple of GB/C titles. I've 'jailbroken' both of my Analogue consoles as well (SG and SNT) although I own flash carts for both :D. I'm surprised we haven't seen anything for the Pocket yet to be honest.

The latest update has been released with Analogues 'OpenFPGA' now available. I have tried the GB/C and GBA cores, fantastic stuff. We are starting to see other cores, such as the Neo Geo.

Hoping to see the obvious cores from the 16bit Gen soon.

What cores is everyone else looking forward to?

Finally got round to updating mine, Have the GB cores, plus NES, SNES, Mega Drive, Master System, Game Gear and SG 1000, still trying to get the Neo Geo core to work though.

Yeah, I've got them, but nothing comes up when you select the folder in the core menu, the folders have the files in them, I need to play around with it to get it to work.

I'll have a look at mine over the weekend and try to help, as I couldn't get the early version of the core to work and seem to recall the blank folders.

Really like the look of these. I know how obsessed I'll get if I start trying to find original systems so this would solve that part and I can still buy the boxed games.
I don't really have much interest in those emulation things, although they are much cheaper.

Anyone on here got an Analogue Pocket and can weigh in on how good they are? Really tempted by being able to have some fun actually collecting physical games albeit with "modern" hardware rather than just picking up an Ambernic or something and emulating everything,.

The Pocket is a form of emulation, albeit cycle accurate. The system is really good, it's nice to play some of the old cartridges I had as a child and newer ones I have picked up.

The system also has Open FPGA which has some really great cores for 8/16bit consoles and also arcade games. Given the price point, it gives MiSTer a run for it's money pre-Saturn/PS1 era.

Analogue recently updated the OS to 2.0 which included scanlines and a few other features, although from what I understand - these aren't the best. However, if it is your thing, it'll be better than nothing!

I have been really impressed with mine, combined with a dock, it is nice to have some FPGA emulation on TV without moving the MiSTer.
