Just went to Anandtech Bench website to refer to some CPU benchmarks in the other thread and found this - http://www.anandtech.com/bench/GPU/88

Apparently Anandtech has launched the new GPU benchmark database. I haven't noticed it earlier.

It may be useful in comparing some GPU configurations if needed for a quick reference, Anandtech reviews have usually been pretty solid to say the least. Hopefully they will update this database with the latest drivers and titles as well.

Here are the long debatable Radeon 5850 vs GeForce 460 1GB results:

Won't they need to keep on re-running these benchmarks as drivers are released? I was under the impression that results varied depending on which version you were running.

I think they'll have to if they want this gpu bench to be worth anything. It will be very disappointing if they don't.

I did a comparison of 5850 vs GTX470 there out of curiousity, and thought...damn...now that GTX470's price has dropped to £220, I think it might not worth buying 5850 at £200(ish) anymore:

Sure it does consume 100W more under load, but if you got a powerful enough PSU does it matter? 100W extra during gaming is probably no more than £10~20 extra a year on the energy bill. Fan noise is not really much louder than the 5850 according to the data there, and as for the high temp, nothing that the custom fan profile can't fix according to the GTX470 owners.

Aside from potential fan noise issues I don't know why anyone would buy the 5850 over the 470 at current prices, the 470 seems to overclock like theres no tomorrow (if your prepared to push it a little you can get 40% overclock and performance gains very close to 1:1 with the clock speed gains percent wise) as well as it seems now marginally having the lead in many cases stock for stock.

Well the 5850's are cheaper, use less power, put out less heat, offer about the same performance and use quieter stock cooling.

Thats erm 1,2,3... yeah 5 and a bit reasons :p

But yeah its good to see you can get a stock GTX470 for a reasonable price now.

The benchmark is a great idea IMO.

The 5xxx series cards can also send DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD over hdmi, something the gf100 cannot do. The gf104 can, not sure why it was left out of the gf100 core. Gtx470 is very competetively priced now though.

Radeon 5870 doesn't look well either tbh.

It doesn't and it never really has looked good either. I'd have a 5850 if I hadn't found a 2GB 5870 for £240. The reason the GTX480 looks so bad though is that it's pretty much £150 more than a GTX470 which is crazy. At least 470s are decent value for money now.

I'm surprised ATI hasn't cut their prices to £190 and £250 for 5850 and 5870 respectively yet. GeForce 480 shouldn't be more than £310 too and Radeon 5970 should be sitting just under £400 (£390). GeForce 460 1GB would settle at £170 and 768MB version would stay at £140. Radeon 5830 going for £130 and Radeon 5770 at £105 tops, with 5750 at £85. Oh, and the GeForce 465 would have to be at £155 mark to sell.

I'm pretty sure we'll eventually see the prices settling like that. Wondering when Northern Islands come down and mess with the market.

According to Gibbo, ATi's cards are still very much in really high demand.

It has to change eventually, Nvidia and its partners made reasonable cuts that make their products equally competitive. For almost a year Radeon 5850 was the best bang for buck card, nowadays things aren't this simple. It's good though, it finally drives the prices down and we're looking forwards to new releases in not that far away future.

But offering comparable value for money that's not the point of premium cards, they offer marginally better performance for much higher premiums. There's plenty of people who will pay £100 more for a HD5870 over a HD5850 even if it offers about 15% more performance.

I might (if I get the time) put those results into a spreadsheet and work out the actually benefit of a HD5850 over a GTX460 like I did with the initial Fermi cards. This should be more compiling then the original data set I done as the HD5850 and GTX460 are both targeted at more value conscious consumers.

Why would AMD change the prices, AMD are gaining ground constantly in the big sales markets, home users buying from stores like OCUK are a tiny portion of sales, why try and appease 1% of buyers, for a short term fight with the 470gtx, a part that is being priced to clear all stocks so the 475gtx based on the GF104 can come out. Being Nvidia, and wanting to make a profit on cards for a change, I can't see it being priced as competitively as the 470gtx.

Considering the 5850 is selling great already, and the 5870 is, and in a month maybe the 470gtx will be gone and likely a 475gtx around the £250 price point, the 5850 will still be selling great at its current price.

300W PSU. ;)

Also the HD5850 is supposed to be a good clocker (not tested mine, as i'm running at about my PSU limits).
