Hi all,

So I bought an item from eBay on the 31st of Dec. Fast forward 2 weeks later and the item still hasn’t showed up.

I messaged the seller and 3 days later I got no response. So I used the eBay resolution centre to raise an “item not received” ticket. Seller replied the same day (surprise surprise).

He messaged me back with a RM tracking number which shows that the item was delivered on the 6th of Jan.

So I replied stating that I didn’t receive the item. The item was supposedly “delivered” on a Saturday which I was in the whole day!

The seller then replies that they will have to lodge a claim with RM and it will take some time.

I live in a block of flats and sometimes post men leave items either in the building entrance (no access to public) or outside my flat door. But they always ring first.

The item in question is nothing special and it’s actually just a car cleaning product not exceeding £20 in value.

What would you do in my situation?
I don’t see how it’s my issue that the item wasn’t delivered to me.

RM could have delivered the item to the wrong address, left it in my building entrance and it was nicked or even they didn’t bother delivering it and just marked it as delivered.

Please discuss

If you paid via Paypal I'd continue the raised claim with ebay and get your money back. The delivery isn't anything to do with you, so there's no reason why you should have to wait for him to resolve the claim.

I see why the seller is doing this, If we cant trust Tracking Numbers then quite simply online shopping doesn't work. While your case is legitimate there might be 10 other cases were someone is trying their luck. If they had no tracking information or the tracking number didn't work then sure you should get a refund right away but as it is saying its being delivered with proof of delivery an investigation is needed, other wise every person can claim they didn't receive there item.

I am a top ebay seller and i can tell you that around 1/30 of did not received items are legitimate. Once i provide the tracking number they simply close the case or never reply to the case and ebay side with me as i have the tracking information.

The risk you take as a seller when you don't use a signed for service...

But we have a tracking number and the Royal Mail saying it has been delivered. Its not as though it was sent 2nd class and were just having to take the sellers word for it. This is why an investigation is needed before action is taken.

And you've never had a postman/courier mark a parcel as delivered when actually it's been given to a neighbour/put in a "safe" place?

It may well have been delivered, but clearly not to the OP, and while I can see the seller's point, they also shouldn't be surprised if the buyer raises an item not received claim rather than being prepared to wait however many weeks it takes for RM to investigate, at least with a signed item you know it's been given to someone and unless they used a fake name/signature then you have somewhere to start looking

If I was looking at this impartially, I'd probably believe you were pulling a scam.

The only reason I don't, is because there would be no point you posting about this here if you were lol.

I feel sorry for the seller, as I doubt hes done anything wrong, and now hes got to deal with this crap.

Obviously sucks for you too.

Hopefully RM cop the bill in the end, but I doubt it.

I used to sell on eBay in the past and I have had my fair share of people claiming the item has not arrived. I've never really had this issue before when buying hence why I was asking here.

Clearly the seller has done the right thing and sent the item, and due to RM the item is now lost. Otherwise I could have just went with the nuclear option and just initiated a cashback on Paypal.

But then again it's not my fault this is all happening and in my mind I'm thinking I bought an item and it hasn't arrived.

I used to sell on ebay a few years back and I can totally relate to what you have posted. People used to claim that the item did not work etc. and as soon as proof is shown people just never reply and I win the case.

That's what I'm thinking tbh, but then again I have sympathy for the seller as it's not their fault either I guess.

Yeah, I wasn't suggesting you should eat the loss or anything. Carry on and escalate the claim or whatever you need to do. I was just saying its unfortunate that the seller will probably end up being out of pocket, but like you say, that's not your fault / problem, so what can you do.

Ultimatley if they have a tracking number saying delivered you will lose a dispute.

However, as its RM the deliveries are GPS tracked so you could ask them to give you the co ordinates or ask where they delivered it.

I'll be interested to see what happens, so please update the thread OP

Someone has to loose out and it'll be interesting to see who. my money is on the seller.

It seems a bit odd to me, where I am RM will only mark it as delivered if it is handed to someone on the door step or it went through a post box. If it will not fit or you are not in then you are carded for collection. They are very consistent with this. You also must take ID on collection.

RM never try a neighbour, or just leave it somewhere.

Sounds like they delivered it to the wrong address.

I came home today to find a ‘Royal Mail next day signed for’ parcel amongst my post that wasn’t for me but for an unknown neighbour two streets up. Postman are human beings so mistakes are made! The seller should put in a claim with Royal Mail for you :)

RM do try neighbours - https://www.royalmail.com/personal/receiving-mail/delivery-to-neighbour - Has been in place for over 5 years.

From previous deliveries to yourselves and neighbours do they treat the block of flats as a secure area where they will put parcels through the communal letterbox ?
also royal mail/yourselves must know if other items have gone astray through communal letterbox.

( This is a bit like the other Hermes/'blur bin' delivery problem and as a buyer need to ensure it will be a signed delivery )
