Android Auto wireless dongle - anyone use one and is it any good?

I had about 30 seconds with it earlier, but have a 4 hr drive tomorrow to stress test it a bit. Initial thoughts weren't spectacular, it took a while to appear on the car itself, and then I remember how annoying Wi-Fi switching/data confusion is. We'll see how we get on...

even with the cabled/wireless lossless pcm amdroid auto or car play ALC you still go through the mixers/re-sample on the phone, so not bit perfect like having music on a USB drive ..
or (the great white hope) Android Automotive where you can have native players & waze, now, with no phone needed, or maybe just simple protocol to get hands free
(I've not dabbled with phone HD audio or volte , but sometimes phone audio quality is meh )

It's something I need to look into actually. How much difference in sound quality is there between using Spotify via wireless android auto, wired android auto, or via a native Spotify app on the head unit connected to either my phone's wireless hotspot or using the headunits built in SIM holder via mobile network. One of my cars has an actual pure android headunit.
As I recall you can turn off all the Spotify volume leveling to get true 0db level tracks, and have the quality set to highest. Done. But with audible quality differences, I would assume I wouldn't be able to detect any.

That's certainly been the case so far for me. Wireless android doesn't use Bluetooth for the data connection does it? I thought it only used Bluetooth for the initial hello, then completes the connection using wireless? Bluetooth is for if a call comes in. On my android headunit there are options for whether wireless android auto connects via even 2.4 vs 5ghz WiFi and the FPS and some other options. None of them make any difference to anything. It either works or doesn't. In my case barely at all wirelessly because I have a Xiaomi phone running problematic MIUI but that's another story.

Yup, so far this has been my experience too. It connected first time straight away this morning when I got in to take the 3 year old to nursery.
After I dropped him off and got back in the car it didn't connect at all.
Popped to the supermarket, got back in the car and it didn't connect, but when I got home I opened the AAWireless app and it connected straight away.

When it's actually connected it's fine, but I bought the dongle for (hopefully) hassle free connection whenever I get in the car - if I have to mess around with my phone anyway, I might as well just plug it in and save myself the £70!

I have been tempted by a phone upgrade for a while though, and since my phone isn't officially compatible (Google states Android 11 or higher), a newer device might sort it out, @dLockers what phone are you using for it?

I actually woke up this morning I was adament I was going to refund this but thought I'd do a final test...So I hopped in the car this morning and it connected first time. I stopped 10 mins later at nursery and did a drop off, hopped back in again and did a 2hr run with sat nav, phone call, music etc. Worked brilliantly. My phone was a fraction of the temperature it normally is!

Do you mind sharing what phone you have and what settings you are using on the dongle?

Sorry haggis didn't mean to be rude just totally missed your post!

So I've touched nothing in all honesty - I connected it yesterday - realised I was likely to get mad at this WiFi switching crap - then thought I'd leave it today.

It's been faultless (just done a refuel and another 2hr drive) - I'm in the car waiting for my little one now typing whilst music/satnav is beamed wirelessly.

My phone is an S23+. I had a warning when setting up to disable battery optimisation for this specific app as Samsung's had a bug or something.

Interestingly I've just noticed the WiFi icon top right isn't there but it does say in the notification tray that it's connected to android auto with some code next to it.

Bluetooth looks connected to.

Possibly your phone is lacking the horsepower/the out of support bit is causing lots of glitches?

No problem :)

Yeah, this is what I'm thinking. When it connects it works great, but connecting is very hit & miss. It seems to work first thing in the morning, and later in the afternoon when I go to pick up the kids, but if I get back in the car after 5-10 minutes it doesn't work. Maybe the app is caching something or the dongle doesn't switch off for a while, and the session gets "stuck" (random guesses/rambling :p)

S23+ is Android 13 right? So it will be fully supported.

Anyway, I have a Pixel 7 coming tomorrow, so hopefully that will sort it out - figured I'm due a new phone after 4 years :p

android core sound runs at 48Khz ...but spotify/cd's are at 44.1 so music gets resampled when sent to the head unit via AA/CP, - it would also get subjected to any EQ'ing in Android, and maybe floating point translation.
Similar situation occurs on windows PC's, but tidal, at least has an exclusive/wasapi mode where music gets sent bit perfect to a DAC - you can taste the difference.

Android 13 , haven't tried it myself, apparently has an audio switcher so you could wirelessly chromecast data from an app to a receptive head unit, which may prove a more accurate transmission.

I have a Carsifi dongle, and really I don't have anything but praise for it. Bought it a couple of months ago, plugged it into the car's USB port, and then paired it with my phone, and I've rarely thought about it since - which I think says a lot about how seamless it's been. I get in the car, the phone connects and Android Auto comes up on the headunit. If you didn't know the dongle was plugged in, you'd just assume the car supported wireless AA from the factory. And the dongle itself is tiny, so it's easy to forget it's there. About the size of a matchbox, but thinner, and it was provided with sticky pads and a short USB cable. I have it mounted neatly in the cubby under the armrest, right next to the USB ports.

It comes with a companion app (not mandatory) which enables some advanced features. You can set adjust the DPI value which used to be useful for fooling AA into thinking my car's screen was bigger than it was, which in turn forced it to display in split screen - however, since Coolwalk, this isn't necessary anymore. There's also a feature to suppress the regular safety taps from being required, and the app will also allow firmware updates. The dongle also has a physical button which will allow you to switch between multiple AA phones connected to it (I haven't used this yet).

So far, no reliability issues. No disconnections, hangs, or failures to connect. No noticeable lag. Really, I am struggling to find any fault with it. The only "downside" I can think of is that it takes a little longer to connect than when plugged in with a physical cable. But even that is being really picky - we are talking maybe 10-15 seconds at most for AA to load. It's generally ready to go by the time I've got comfortable and have plugged my seatbelt in.
I bought one of these a month or so ago for my works vehicle, so gets used multiple times a day and totally agree with how great it's been. It's been faultless. I would highly recommend Carsifi dongle.

The only thing that I would say has been different re your comment about it's boot up speed. I think it's because on my vehicle the usb powers up as soon as the remote key fob unlocks the vehicle, so by the time I've sat down started the engine and the dash has booted, it's already connected and working, and it's great it takes zero input from me, it just works while the phone stays in my pocket.

Edit: Forgot to mention, while the cars screen is running from Carsifi Android Auto it's actually faster and more responsive and I love the way it can do split screen showing two running apps at the same time, the original cabled connection couldn't do anything like that.

Well... Bad news and good news today.

Bad news is my Pixel didn't come (and won't be...) ID decided that I can't get 2 contracts in 2 days (got my son his first phone earlier in the week as he's starting secondary this year), might just buy one outright, but will end up costing more overall :(

Good news is that the dongle has started working perfectly on the P30 :p

I disabled the start/stop option and so far it's connected straight away every time I've got in the car today

So got back from visiting the family, on the way there I stopped at my Dads so that was 1 hour there and then 2 hours to my Mums, way back just now was 3 hours in one go, the AAWireless worked seamlessly the whole way so good news :) Gonna clean up the install as currently it's just dangling so gonna use some velcro to stick it out of the way and job done.

No problem :)

I've got a Pixel 7 btw and had no issues with connection, it just automatically connects and sorts itself out. There is a bit of a delay but I think a good part of that is the port is always on so the AAWireless does a start/stop thing based on the screen status and that doesn't power on until I sit in the car. Really it's a small delay though, by the time I'm ready to drive it's popped up and ready to go.

Still annoyed at how perfect this thing is working, as I was determined to get the 70 quid back!

One glitch in my own nuanced use case is Waze. It is really annoying on AA as you can't use the keyboard and it doesn't easily let you add fuel stops. So traditionally I'd unplug and then use it on my phone and plug back in. I didn't try hard because I was stumped as to how to handlet his situation - I guess I could have disabled WiFi for a second.

On mine, I found that Waze will disable the search option unless I have the handbrake on. As soon as I have it on the textbox appears, but as soon as it's off it disappears again. To be honest I mostly use it for music. The nav in the Kia seems pretty good, and it seems like it can add charge points en-route if there isn't enough range (although I've not tried in on a long journey yet!)

Could you link to the one you got? I've been tempted to get one and was hoping to hear how well it works with a Pixel 7
