Can any more expert player give some advice on resource production?

I've watched a video with some great tips, but theres one thing I don't quite get - in his video he says having a tool shop (as an example) on a seperate island to his iron production is fine, as long as he puts the tool shops right by a market place. However, I can't seem to get goods produced on one island to another without a ship, am I missing something simple?

you need to bring iron to the island that has the tool makers. I think its only iron you need.

same with anything you have to bring the raw materials to the "maker", in your case (if memory serves me right) you need to have an iron ore mine, and a smelter, you also need some form of coal for the smelter, either hut or mine, then take the iron bars to your island with the toolmakers.

market houses only store what the island generates/is given its not shared across the whole map

You might run out of raw materials on your resource island that way, if you use them for anything. Then you'll have a little ship loaded with iron going back and forth between your two islands without doing anything. Best to figure out how much iron your second island goes through and adjust the load to keep up with demand. It's a bit trial and error, but take a wild stab and keep an eye on the levels in your secondary island over the next few trips - doesn't take long to get it right.

I think this is why I never got into 1404 before, the micromanagement is fun, and I do like that, but there's too much running resources back and forth - I find automated routes really aren't great.

It also needs a better market place in my opinion - somewhere to check best prices, who trades what and so on.

Uff getting to the point where it's getting irritating to play again, rather then fun. I'm on a continous game. Have a city population of ~5,000 and I'm struggling to get money. I have about 10,000 gold coins, but a low +ve income, and more often then not it ducks into the negative.

Struggling to produce enough supplies: despite having dozens of hemp farms supplying 6 weavers cottages I run out of linen a lot, people move out, I go heavily into negative and have to recover...10 fisheries aren't supplying enough fish, I've just about got a good supply of spices going from a southern island with 12 spice farms.

All things are grown on other islands, and then shipped to my main island. At the docks there I have a small production area for linen, rope and such, but most things are also made on other islands. I want to expand, build more houses on my main island and obviously get more and more population, but I can barely support the one I have. Is there a more efficient way to do things?

Just a quick FYI for people having trouble with space saving. When trying to figure out having 2 rows of buttons I stumbled accross this, and since then my life has been a lot more productive lol.

They should've called this game 'keeping up with the joneses'. I really love base building but it only really means something if you do it with the threat of combat lurking round the corner. Bit disappointed. :(

Yay the expansion just arrived :D:D

Steam and official forums have some good advice and build layouts, for the posters above. By the way, for the ones who enjoy it: When the game asks you to do a questionnaire at some point, please do it, the devs actually listen :)
