ANNO 1404

Yes, the questionaire was a nice touch, wish more devs were proactive like that. Can't wait to see what they have instore for their next release.

I'm such a jaded gamer these days but little gems like the Anno series always make it fun to play.

Just perusing the game reviews on Amazon and I know there was a backlash against the drm but really surprised how many people rated the game 1 star because of the drm with no reference to the actual gameplay. Especially as the patches removed drm. Poeple still giving it 1 star for drm issues and we're on patch 1.2 now, shocking.

yeah DRM has been removed thankfully, people really shouldn't rate a game based on whether it has DRM or not, its arrogant and pointless. ratings are for the gameplay, etc. rather than protection. i know DRM is annoying but holy hell i for one am sick of all these threads about it on here recently, doesn't mean i agree with DRM though, infact i 100% don't agree with it but come on, give it a rest people. or at least be constructive about it? :p

I know, to give 1 star out the gate due to drm is poor show, however Ubisoft's latest efforts are soo bad I really can't blame people trying to get them to take note!

The DRM's been removed ? has this been confirmed anywhere ? been dying to play this but avoided it thanks to the naff DRM.

As for the low/1 star reviews, I'm afraid I see why people do it, I think that if a games company decideds to implement some draconion DRM system in with their game, then it should be reviewed as a complete package, DRM included. That way if you happen to find you struggle to play the game due to the DRM then you would rightly score the game low, if you found the DRM made no impact whatsoever to your ability to play then it would not factor into your review and this is the way all DRM's should operate imho, they should be invisible to the customer.

played anno 1404 before without being connected to internet, no ubi account asked for, just goes straight to menu no problems, its definately removed.

thing is though, so many people refuse to try a game because of DRM, i personally have never had a single issue with any form of DRM and i have EA, ubisoft and activision programs, don't exactly have the worlds fastest internet either, it is cable however and not prone to disconnecting or anything like that. so i guess its only a problem for those with flakey connections.

Soo want to play this again :) But uni life dictates I should be studying and drinking rather than sitting playing this long game

I got this today, why doesn't it come with any instructions? The manual tells you nothing and there's no in game tutorial or help

How did I miss this one first time round, only spotted it after the tread bump. Used to like Sim city and Civ so I hopefully this will be good for killing a few hours. Just check and i cant believe this this is £34.99 on steam or £11.99 for the DVD. Theres the collectors edition thing for £2 more, so I think I will click on that rather than via Steam.

Just another quick tip or two for people. Been playing it again co-op with a mate and discovered some new cool shortcuts. I tend to remove ascension rights for my population so I can level em when I want. When at the town center where yuo can click to upgrade people, if yuo shift click it upgrades them all (resources permitting). Also I tend to build farms to the easy layouts online then fill the fields by hand, or by the autoplant tool. If you shift clickt hat autoplant tool it does all the farms on the island. Same with shift clicking to replenish resources / norias. Very handy and time saving, specially the population upgrades.

Gonna need more info then that. Theres the tax rate ofcourse, but I assume thats fine. Then theres remembering to keep the buildings they need in range of ones who havent yet upgraded.
But tbh I think you need more peasents. You always need a set percentage of the each civilization level to allow advance, so you'll never entirely remove all peasents.

yeah i noticed that, i mean i was playing and thought 'how the hell do i use a mine?' since there was no instructions on how to do anything...

I lose interest in this game after building x amount of x farms and still not being able to produce enough.

Making money is really quite difficult.

Have you tried using the calculator linked above? It tells you what you need for your amount of people, and ofc you always overproduce a little, specially if its on shipping routes.

I can usually produce enough to keep them happy, but then large population boosts to boost income are troublesome.

The main problem I find is that the computers trading interaction is..well poor at best.

Can't seem to get that calculator working.

And am I reading this wrongly?

http://www.anno1404-rechner.de/versorgung?lang=en

1 fishery supports 285 beggars and 200 peasants and 500 citizens? or 285 beggars or 200 peasants?

Maybe my starting strategy needs changing - I usually send out ships to put a warehouse on useful islands even if I don't start building on them straight away, to stop the computer taking them all.

Ok well I have that calculator working - as an example it says I'll need 5 breweries to supply my current population. I have 6 going constantly (eg fully stocked) and a ship bringing the beer to my main island and it's never enough . Same with bread - I have more then that calculator says I'll need to produce enough bread, but its always short.

Yah its best to never rely on the computer trader beyond basic tools shortages at the start. If you want a tip on getting a really good income, try building a LOT of houses to start. Say 4 or 5 settlements worth. But dont upgrade them more then citizens. Basically beyond buildings they dont need much to keep them happy so once they fill their houses you can ramp up the tax rate to yellow and keep them ticking over for a long time while you worry about a few higher level people. One thing I do try to do is when it comes to upgrading a level, I upgrade one person first. Then fulfil their wishes then upgrade a load more. Gives you a lot more leeway with tax income then as when you first upgrade a house, if its needs arent satisfied, they dont have people moving in and your tax income goes down per house. So yeah upgrade one person, satisfy their needs, then upgrade a load more.

Well what I started doing on a new game I started (went bankrupt in my patrician game :p) was to ascend people until I had 340(?) citizens which gave me access to all their buildings and then haven't allowed anyone to ascend to patricians. Lots of negative reputation with my competitors but screw them. Still, I managed to spend 50,000 gold coins in about 30 minutes..

I tend not to have a dock area on my main island with things like weavers huts/rope merchants and then ship in the hemp. Fisheries and one wood farm just in case, other then that everything is shipped in.
