Could someone do a short guide on research and that stuff? I currently have an accedemy and some labortatories but don't really understand what all this module and prototype stuff is.

I just finished my 'Energy Generation Research' and got a message saying a new formual prototype or something had been generated but I cannot find out what it is.

I'll write up something when I get back from the job centre around midday if you can wait that long :p

Just started to build my monument :) - took out a load of services and houses to fit it in. My residents got annoyed and left, but it will be worth it in the long run :p (assuming I don't run out of cash - got 300k though, so should be enough!)

Trading piles of diamonds at the moment, they make so much money!

Stupid service bots for the Eco Exec's. Went from +1,300 down to -1,700 due to having to start up a totally new island for bot production, those buildings cost a fortune to keep running! Ending up getting it back to down -300 with an extra 300 Exec's moving in and then moving the taxes to calm from happiness. So not worth it :/

Is it possible to do any of the following, because I can't find any way to do them, assuming you even can:

1. Request a pick up from a factory immediately, like 1404 had.
2. Get the goods to spread over factories more. Example: 4 factories needing goods. One has 4/5, another 2/5, another 1/5 and the other is 0/5. Should be 2/2/2/3.
3. Get the warehouse to automatically pick up goods when I want. Currently they are only picking up goods from my corn farms when they are 3/4 full, would prefer 2/4 or even 1/4 to not delay the bio polymer factories.

Ok I have my guide ready lol. This is going to be a bit screenshot intensive so bear with me! I might try wrapping the pics in tags to help.

I cant complete the 3rd one yet :/ I've managed to get enough ships to wipe out his ships, but you cant tech up enough to get anything better then crap ships lol. So you cant take out the turrets. Just as my resources were running out I managed to get aircraft which their turrets cant attack, but their ships came out en masse and obliterated them :( Any tips?

I just put a forward post on the island closest to his base with two shipyards and two repair cranes. I then pumped as many ships as I could and took out a turret at a time, sending ships back for repair once they lost ~50% health.

Ok first things first. You dont get access to any kind of research until you unlock the tech 'faction'. The techs are unlocked when either faction reaches level 3, eco engineers are the eco equivilent.
screenshot0024.jpg
Once you reach this level you will get a message from Eve saying you can unlock the SAAT blueprints or something. Go to your ark and there will be a new button on the top left of it like below.
screenshot00265.jpg
But this will say something about unlocking the tech. Once you click this Eve wil say it costs £10k are you sure etc. Once its unlocked you get access to all their blueprints and be able to use the tech buildings.
As you can see below:
screenshot0025.jpg
There are 2 levels of techs. Only 2. The light red is level 1, lab assistants. The dark red is Researchers.
Lab assistants unlock the use of a laboratory, and this is the first stage of your research.
screenshot0026.jpg
Everything you can craft in the lab is a one time use item. IE you use it, and it gets used up. The bottom half of these are placed in your warehouse on an island, and the top half are for ships.
screenshot0027.jpg
As you can see from this image, things like this filtration plant can give a very welcome boost to a flaggin eco balance, and are useful to keep running. Another very important thing to note is at the bottom left of the lab screen you have a 15% mark, which is the chance, every time you create an item, to discover a prototype. These will be discusses later.
screenshot0028.jpg
This building show above is the academy, and this is where the real magic happens. This is unlocked with researchers and from here you can research major improvements to your cities. Bare in mind most of these are socketed in your Ark based on tier, as below.
screenshot00266.jpg
You can unlock more per tier as your career progresses.
The main thing to note about research is that you start off with very few items unlocked. The basic research at the top is where you should start. Every time you research, for example, units research, you unlock one more researchable item in the units section. As you see below you can eventually unlock all of them.
screenshot0029.jpg
Ok now one you start unlocking bigger and better research items you will discover tech 3 (3 star) items. These are the best items in the game but will need a lot of materials to make. As you can see below:
screenshot0030.jpg
The items in red are everything you need in stock before you can research this item. The item in yellow however is a lower tech version of the same item which you will need first.
screenshot0031.jpg
As you can see below, the lower teir version of the item also needs a lot of parts, and has similar benefits to the teir 3 item, if in lower numbers.
screenshot0032.jpg
Now two of the needed materials are every day items you may already have an excess of, but the ones outlined in red below are not. These are items you can research in your labs! So instead of using up the items as you gain them, you could be saving them up for these items.
screenshot0033.jpg
Also its worth noting if you're short on spare items, every major item does have a teir 1 equivilent which needs nothing more then time and money. Its nowhere near as effective as teir 3 but still a nice boost. Unfortunately I took a picture of the wrong one here...
screenshot0034.jpg
Now for a very important note about prototypes. Some very high end items like the super rotar below will need prototypes.
screenshot0035.jpg
Prototypes can be gained in a few different ways. Firstly through making items in your labs you have a chance of creating a random one. Through some quests yuo can also sometimes gain one. THeres also a chance of finding abandoned old world labs on the oceon floor, although I've only ever found one without bribing an npc. Lastly, if you have a large excess of money and licences (you can easily max out lisences at 9,999 if you are creating a lot of lab items), then you can buy prototypes from trenchcoat whenever hes visiting.
screenshot0036.jpg
It may seam expensive but its a constant supply of random items. Once you buy his first one you can rotate his stock like any other npc for a small charge (which is then more expensive each time, until its maximum price of £3k).
This, along with creating items in your lab whenever you have spare materials, are good ways to ensure yuo have the prototypes you need by the time you have researched the item you are after.

PS. Two things I forgot to add. Firstly research is random. It is entirely possible to unlock a teir 3 energy building item before you unlock the teir 2 version needed to create it!

I also forgot to add this picture:
screenshot00264.jpg
At the bottom of your academy, in yellow here, you will find a percentage. When you first build your academy this is 100%. Depending on how many people you have living in the area this number rises to a maximum of 500%. This massively speeds up your research. Its worth noting, surrounding the academy with lab assistants (level 1 techs) wont get this very high, and researchers are needed. As you can also se, once it gets past 500% the rest of the population will be 'wasted' and it might be worth adding another academy nearby.

I hope this helps!

edit* Lol took 4 edits to fix my image tags, sorry!

Excellent post oxygene, thanks!

Never used the Academy at all yet, just the lab to make some probes / drill bits.

Was afraid it was a bit of a spam fest :/

Nah, the pictures helped a lot :) was a little disappointed to find out the Academy only works for Tech people though to boost the percentage figure as I put one in my Eco city for building diversity and it's not affecting it :/ ah well.

It looks to me like getting 30k population like in 1404 will be fiendishly difficult.

Could you even fit 30k people on one island? I'm on a reasonable sized island at the moment with my city and I have around 6k and I've taken up about 1/3 of it, even then I needed another 1/4 of it for power / eco balance.

I am currently deciding on either this, Batman or Skyrim as a christmas treat to myself.

With Batman and Skyrim I know what I am getting but this is an unknown entity. Whats it like in terms of 'coolness' and lasting / replayability. At the moment Civ V is my goto strategy 4x game when i fancy a blast, is this the sort of game you can not play for a few months and suddenly get a hankering and get rright back into it?

Yeah, or at least for me. I often would just leave 1404 alone for a while, then get an urge to play and go back to it and this is just the same. It's a really great game (2070) and if you like SimCity style games or city building games in general then you should love this.

Yeah used to love the early sim city games. Never had an anno game even though I have always been tempted to try one. I love sci fi also so the setting of this game makes it even more enticing.

I will probably end up flipping a coin between batman and Anno!

Doubt it. But then in 1404 I didn't have one population island. But it was easier to split that with Europeans/Nomads.

You could try the demo out first if you wanted too, make sure you like it :)
