My city :) just starting mass building to the south of the island, hence the underdeveloped bottom half. Denied ascenion rights and put the initial workers on yellow taxes so they wouldn't move in (means 1/8 house until I choose to let them move in). Helped me get it sorted. After that, allowing 1500 new people to move in then get the fish and tea sorted. Moved them up to employees recently which demanded more communicators / health food which was a nightmare to sort... still actually sorting it.

Population is 8,002 although only using the Child & Career station for more tax income rather than Better Living for more population. When I get them all up to Executive level and switch TV channel should be looking around 11k. Once I've done that can expand to the east which is already plotted out. Hoping to hit 20k on the island when done.

Currently no world event? Has that one finished then?
Aye, all done now until another one pops up.

That is one tiny island! I have 10000 people in my city and haven't even used half of my main island - plenty of others to spill into if needed too. I guess it depends on the map.

Took a few shots last night and it really is a good looking game -

Aye :p I started originally on medium map size with large islands but I found the map too big. But now I've moved to a small map size with large islands I'm finding it much harder to support a higher population level due to lack of space.

Nice pictures of the city! what's that big structure in the underwater base? dock line looks really nice too. Wish I could get my docks like that, but other than one shore line the rest have major issues with accepting stuff when I place them there and constantly just say "area blocked" :/

I started with a small map, but quickly realised I was going to need more space. I think I am about 16 hours into that map now, and I can see so much more to do!

The underwater base is the NPC trading base :)...none of mine look very impressive. I wish there was more space to build underwater, but then given the huge number of resources down there, I can see why it is restricted.

I was really lucky with the starting dock line - learning how to join the buildings together helped a lot too.

Quick question - I have unlocked two tiers of both tycoons and techs, is there a third to unlock?

Tech definitely only has two tiers, but Tycoon should have all 4... unless they restrict you to two tiers if you start as Eden, can't say for sure though.

Not sure if I actually want to unlock the rest, or just fill the island with more ecos. Only other thing I want is hydroelectric dams, but I am currently researching that building anyway - not sure if I then need higher levels of tycoons to unlock it.

You can unlock everything regardless of what you start with.

Currently have three islands of 10k+ population of all three factions at all civilization levels.

So you prefer to keep each population type to its own island? Interesting idea...

Well in 1404 I had one main northern island and one main southern island. The only difference in 2070 is the Techs. I keep them on their own island with lots of production facilities to supply the labs.

Keeping them seperate is really useful imo. Late game I know i'm going to have an island per faction with no production save for mine sites and all population, all covered by monument buildings. Easier to keep them apart now to save on messing with trade routes later.

New patch coming :)

• Fixed smaller issues in several quests
• Fixed smaller issues with the interface.

I have a really bad feeling that my current continuous game is bugged. I am not getting anyone moving into the residences anymore, even the most basic housing (of which there is a lot of). All needs are met and ascension rights are released :(

Edit: Silly me - I has temporarily raised taxes due to a population uprising!

Never played a game like this before but I'm started to get quite interested in the look of it. Is this a complex game for a complete newbie to the genre? Hopefully it's in the xmas sales on steam.

I'm kind of confused as to what type of game it actually is.

Is it a city builder like Sim City?, a turn based RTS like Age of Empires?...which is it?

Yeah, it's a city builder. You colonise islands and develop them in order to build up your populations and get them moving up the social ladder. As your citizens increase in social stature, they demand more luxurious goods to keep them happy.

So the main activity of the game is exploiting resources. You put buildings down which produce resources, and they can either be used straight away, traded, or are part of a chain. It's about maximising your production via the efficient placement of producers and managing your supply chains. All the while you're "competing" against other nations doing exactly the same. I say "competing" like that because while you are nominally playing against other nations, and there is a combat element, the Anno games are extremely peaceful. Combat is more or less an afterthought. And if you play in the sandbox (pretty much the way most people play) you can tailor it so there's no combat at all if you want.

Although I've made it sound boring, it really isn't. The pace of the game is very, very slow, but because you're soon managing multiple supply chains on multiple islands you always have loads to do. You even have to manage your fleet of ships, which you use to complete NPC missions and, more importantly, ferry goods and resources between your islands.

I haven't played 2070 myself but, if it's anything like 1404 (which it is), I can assure you it's a stunning game. Play it to relax or play it to satisfy the number-crunching geek inside you, but you will lose hours and hours to it. :)

A very good write-up. I am new to the series (never got round to picking up 1404) - am really enjoying this game and have sunk many hours into it. Haven't even gotten to the campaign yet! Would definitely recommend it if you are into city building games. I can't comment too much on the combat element since I am currently playing a peaceful continuous game.

Tbh combat in either game doesnt real factor in until you are after more of a challenge. The pirates you can add to the continuous game are to be considered an extra supply line factor as all they do is pick on your supply ships, and never actually threaten your settlements / buildings. Think of it as another factor you can turn on or off in the options, more then an actual gameplay point.
