I Get 'Auto-disconnect in ...seconds' in the top right of the screen when joining games.

Usually happends when joining the first one or two games, but can happen randomly. It is very annoying  After that it plays absolutely fine.

I have windows firewall and steam is allowed on there. I have also opened up more ports on router, but it still doesn't do anything. I have always had this problem. Firstly at my student house with O2. Now at my home with BT. I have also formatted several times since then.

Anyone have any ideas?

And yes I've tried the steam forums many times... but no luck yet.

wired or wireless network? valve games try and keep you in game when you drop connection and will retry for 25 seconds or whatever it is, if your networking is flaky dropped packets can cause this

It's wired and I don't have packet loss problems in other games.

I have the same issue and i am also on BT....althoguh this issue only started a few weeks ago on L4D2 Mine is slightly worse too. I get disconnected and it also ends up rebooting my router.

If i try a few times it will eventually work though.

My mate had this very issue with the first L4D too. I think its something to do with the homehub.

I am also wired and have a very stable connection.

Is the BT homehub a repackaged Thompson 780 or something? Maybe this is why I have the same problem as I did when I was on O2? That was a Thompson 780 thingy

I've got no solution for you, but I also get that all the time in L4D and L4D2... and I'm also on BT (not using the wireless though).

It's the only game that causes me problems. It seems to happen 70% of the time if I am a lobby leader, and around 30% of the time if someone else is the lobby leader. Basically I get into the game okay, run around for 20 seconds then it'll show me the 'trying-to-reconnect' message. After I get booted out I can reconnect and it's usually fine. It's really annoying.

For the last month or so I've been renting my own L4D2 server with a few mates, and since then I've not seen the problem once - probably due to the fact that you connect to the server in a slightly different way (i.e. a console command). Not a solution for you I know, but it kinda suggests that there is a bit of a problem with the way it searches-for and connects-you to the servers.

I would bet that it's something to do with BT though.

I just moved to o2 broadband (from BT) and used the router they provided and had the same problem, swapped the router back to my linksys and the problems gone :o

i got the same problem on sky, started today, no problems at all last week, i get the lost connection to server message ever 5 -10 seconds.

i have the same problem , but everytime i join a game i get kicked first time then i can normally join fine after that, also on bt with home hub 2

SAME

Thanks everyone for responses. I may buy a new reuter tonight and see if that cures it. Will reply with results at another date.

It's 99% likely it's down to the BT home hubs being rebadged Speedtouch/Thompson devices. Check the fix in case below as my Bebox built off the same hardware:

You'll need to connect to your router by telnet. Click on "Start", then select "Run", type "cmd" and press Enter or click "Ok". This will bring up a command prompt.
Type "telnet speedtouch", or if that doesn't work then type "telnet 192.168.1.254".
You will be prompted to login to the modem with a username/password. The default is one of the following:

Username: Administrator [edit: this is the default for BeBox]
Password: None (or try the Serial number on the bottom of your BeBox).

Username: admin [edit: this is the default for HomeHub]
Password: admin

Username: SuperUser [edit: this is the default for the O2WirelessBox]
Password: O2Br0ad64nd

If neither of those combinations work, please contact your Internet Service Provider for assistance

Once you have logged in, you will be presented with the command line of your modem. This is where you must enter the following commands:
Type "connection bindlist" and press enter. This will list connection bindings.
Look for a line that contains "GAME" and some port numbers. For example: GAME(UDP) udp 27010-27011
Enter the command: "connection unbind application=GAME(UDP) port=27***-27***" and press enter. The port numbers in this command must match the numbers that are listed in your GAME port listing, similar to the example above.
When finished, close the command line and launch Steam. Try joining the game server and see if it works correctly. If it does not, please contact your router manufacturer or Internet.

I had this problem in LFD2 and searched for 2 weeks to find the problem after many hours of reading on this forum and steam forums and elsewhere all everybody could put it down to was their firewall's, So after trying the everything including changing router settings, checking ports and allowing steam and LFD2 exclusive access through the router and F-Secure to no avail, I decided to uninstall F-Secure and Problem Solved it was F-Secure causing the problem all along, After testing and being able to join any game on any server i chose i was well happy, then i decided i better get some decent security so i searched here and found microsoft security essentials was highly recommended so i installed that and all has been good since.......

Note: I tried just unloading F-secure to test my connection to Gmaes servers but the problem still persisted, I had no choice but to uninstall it...........

Oh and ensure you run Steam as Administrator....

Im on O2 Broadband gaming over wireless without and probs...

I couldn't connect to telnet, but I did make sure Steam games were added in the application list thingy.

So far this has fixed my problem: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?p_faqid=50

Thanks pre!

EDIT: A whole night of L4D2 without problems... Oh joy! I would kiss you if I could Pre. Updating the master server list did the trick. Or maybe it was the port thing? Whatever I did it worked. I'll reply back if problem returns.

Holy thread revival!! But can I just say this seems to have worked for me too :D Thanks.

I had noticed the L4D games doing the same thing to me almost every time I played and I have a BT HomeHub.

Trying these fixes now.

Thanks for the thread revival :D

Update:

Turns out I have a version of the homehub that doesn't allow Telnet to access it so I cannot try the method pre posted.

I did, however, download the 2 server files and managed to have one whole game of killing floor (I have not been able to do this for a while!!).

Then the next game I joined the problem started all over again and now I cannot stay connected to any server for more than 2 mins. :(

Is it possible to make the TG585 series routers into a wireless relay. If other equipment is already ok then that might be its most useful purpose
