Another 9800 x3d mainboard thread

From your research about compatible rams, it seems as its just a MSI thing and quite random? As said, i been building pc's since Windows 3.1 and trust me, i aint ever heard of a mobo not being compatible with a speciic brand/ram.It is one of the most universal component you can fit in.
Normally, I'd agree with you, but I think this is something more specific to the latest AM5 motherboards. There are numerous threads on the MSI forums highlighting issues with X870 boards having compatibility issues with certain Corsair RAM. I believe @N0ddie was just highlighting this to potentially avoid a headache. Many have had no issue, but if there's similar RAM at the same price, then not sure why you wouldn't go with that.

From what I can see:

B850M Gaming X:
- Uses all 8 of the CPU's spare lanes for the M.2 slots (4x PCI-E 5.0, 4x PCI-E 4.0).
- No lane sharing with the GPU.
- USB4 is not present.

TUF B850M-Plus:
- Uses all 8 of the CPU's spare lanes for the M.2 slots (4x PCI-E 5.0, 4x PCI-E 4.0).
- It also uses 4 chipset lanes for a third M.2 slot.
- No lane sharing with the GPU.
- USB4 is not present.

B850 Tomahawk Max:
- Uses all 8 of the CPU's spare lanes for the M.2 slots (8x PCI-E 5.0).
- It also uses 6 chipset lanes for a third (2 lane) and fourth (4 lane) M.2 slot.
- No lane sharing with the GPU.
- USB4 is not present.

I'd strongly recommend checking the manual of your chosen board, since I only looked at the manual briefly of the Tomahawk.
Thank you Tetras. I guess I need to do more rethinking, I don't really know what the implications are of things sharing 'spare' lanes or why there even are spare lanes. But it does seem the B850 does a lot of sharing. :)

So then this isn't really a problem? If I only have 1 gpu and 1 m.2? And I've been worrying over nothing.
As my cpu and board has enough lanes to support my x16 gpu and a m.2. It's not stealing lanes, just using them.

This would be different if I only had enough lanes for the gpu and my m.2 shared some of those lanes.

Yea i am not sure what is wrong with Noddie. He/she got triggered rather easily on something that was minor and trivia.

Are you shooting fo 6000mhz? is this because you want to OC? if you are not doing OC or nothing to drastic, then any 3000mhz ddr5 ram with low C is good enough.

I was following advice on the memory for 9800x3d thread. I'm unsure if I want to OC I think if I do I'll need to invest more heavily in a cooler as my best cooler wont fix the case.

Pretty much any board can do 1x GPU and 1x M.2 without any sharing. X870/X870E have a bigger problem than B850 just because the USB4 ports often take 4 of those 8 spare lanes from the CPU.

Also massive apologies to everyone the memory I want to use is on the QVL for the tomahawk mainboard, just it had 3 tabs for memory by 9xxx or memory by 8xxxg and CMK32GX5M2B6000Z30 is on the 8xxxg tab but not the tab the website defaults to.
