Another Accident

They could have put any word on that hi-vis but they chose the word 'POLITE' on a black background. What was wrong with just 'Think Bike'.....I know why.....Its because it doesn't look like 'POLICE'.

abs wouldn't have saved you either imo, just too little too late,ALWAYS try to anticipate what drivers are likely to do or any open gaps in traffic slow down for

it all comes with experience tbh,and even then you can get caught out from time to time, its a real shame your camera wasn't roling,id have been looking/getting witnesses names/addresses if there were any

I didn't even consider witnesses as I thought the cam was on and as I ride that route several times a week and know someone will inevitably duck into the bus lane on weekends so I kept my speed down which probably why I wasn't hurt and my bike looks OK. I never go hard on the brakes because I kinda worry about locking them up which shouldn't worry me too much with ABS, why wouldn't it save me?

Anyway I'm convinced the chap just pulled out on me at the last minute but without the video can't be 100% sure and will just have to wait to see what happens with the insurance when they finally get back to me.

just hit the brakes as hard as you can, thats my initial reaction,if I feel the front start to slip from under me I let go and re apply the brake as fast as I can,i know its easy telling you but harder in reality I guess

im not trying to criticise you btw just thinking out loud of options you could have tried ect

right now its his word against yours,he didn't see you or you didn't see him

and yeah its usually the drab mundane journeys that accidents happen on

EDIT: just stick to your guns and don't admit any liability

I mean if he saw me like he claimed then why pull out and if he had completed the maneuver then why did I hit the side of his vehicle and not the rear?

That's all you need to know. If it was your right of way then he has no defence at all. What can he say? That he saw you and decided to pull across anyway. Or that he didn't see you and therefore was not paying full attention. In future always try and get a witness, it saves a lot of hassle in the long run.

Was travelling along in the bus lane on the Old Kent Road when someone pulled into it and I slammed into the side of them.

What really annoys me is that I had my helmet cam on and wasn't recording and they're disputing that it's their fault. I mean if he saw me like he claimed then why pull out and if he had completed the maneuver then why did I hit the side of his vehicle and not the rear?

Thankfully I'm not injured and the bike appears to have a few superficial scratches.

Then on the way home you wouldn't believe the number of near misses I had riding in the rain at night. Has shaken me up a bit but I'm not giving up on biking just yet.

Need a new camera though and I want one hardwired with loop recording as that's the main reason I don't always have my helmet cam on.

Glad to hear you've okay and the damage sounds minimal - did the bike just slide down the road? Probably a good idea to get it checked for any strtuctural damage.

Also, Innovv C3 camera (and probably others in the range) does rolling footage.

Slammed into the side of the car the fell on my leg, which probably cushioned it lol.:D

My new Top box is now scuffed and the exhaust doesn't look great plus the rear brake lever has chunk missing from underneath it but otherwise it looks ok.

Gonna get one of those hi-vis think bike vests now like neighbour has.

Please don't dress up like a pretend copper, BVGs views on these are absolutely spot on. A standard high vis vest is fine.

You might as well put a big neon sign over you head saying "Walter Mitty".

if he saw you and pulled out = dangerous driving

if he didn't see you cause he didn't look = careless driving.

if you get the police involved it can help the insurance case.

I used to wear a hi-vis one but yeah mine is a black Hein Gericke now, still the chap says that he saw me so I'm not sure it would have helped in this case assuming his judgement is that poor.

Only if you want every other person on the road to hate you :p

As wazza said, you can be as bright as you want and they still won't see you or pay attention. Just get a nice loud exhaust, keep an eye out and hope.

BVG Sums it up nicely:

EDIT: Removed video as it contains swearing.. search for his video on these vests.

WOW! What a nutter. Wonder if he's still about, or if somebody has kicked his ass! Never before has a pooing through letter box been more justified!

But the oddball has a long list of convictions of his own, including driving without a licence, MoT, or insurance – and speeding.

Most bizarrely, he was once jailed for stealing donations to a private ambulance charity – which he’d set up so he could live out his fantasy of riding with flashing lights and a siren.

Can't help but wonder what you were doing riding in the bus lane in the first place.

Granted, I don't know the road you describe, but maybe if you'd been behind this chap instead of, presumably filtering/undertaking on his inside in the bus lane, then when he pulled over without looking you would have been out of danger?

Some bus lanes are open for bikes to use, why wouldn't you use them?
