Looking for something a little less premium priced for the Clio. I love the PE2s, but supplies are almost non-existent now and what is left is stupidly expensive.

I'm not looking to drop down to linglongs, but want something reasonably cheap in my size (205/45/16) - say around the £60-70 mark.

From a quick look around here and the owners club, it's a toss up between Hankook V12s and Uniroyal Rainsport 2s, but I'm interested in hearing informed opinions of both (if you thought FK452s were a good tyre, you can discount your opinion as informed :P) and any potential contenders there may be.

I don't drive hard on the road much any more, but they should offer a decent level of grip and feel for when the mood takes me or in the event it's hammering it down at an autotest or track day and my cut slicks are no good - so I'm not about to jump in to premium contacts or anything like that.

You imply that PremiumContacts may not offer you the grip a Hankook V12 or Rainsport 2 does. I'm not so sure thats the case? They are pretty good?

Pretty sure you can get a SportContact in that size anyway so I'd just do that.

It could just be the geometry of the Focus, but I really don't like the premium contacts when on the limit - they squeal like hell and just seem to go all "floppy" - lacking any sort of feel or feedback. Whilst they offer good levels of grip, they don't feel like a performance tyre.

SC2s are over £80 a corner.

Whats wrong with Pirelli P Zeros? I have 205/45 R16s myself on the Fiesta (not the standard tyre size but I changed to lighter and smaller wheels a while back).

Way cheaper than PE2s and the like - around £60 to £70 from Camskill last time I looked. I would have gone for Michelins but I couldn't justify spending £120 on a tyre when the P zeros were so cheap.

Known for good dry grip (especially when you get some heat into them), stiff sidewalls, and giving up grip progressively at the limit.

I have rainsports on a 55/16, they are great, but, they Do have a soft sidewall, so if that's a major issue you may want to look elsewhere. Apart from the side wall I find them to be excellent.

I'm torn on the sidewall thing. I think the cars setup will work better with a stiffer sidewall but something a little softer wouldn't be too bad for daily use.

How soft is it? T1R soft or harder than that?

Ditto.

Doesn't bother me though as I drive something wafty anyway.

The V12 is a very good tyre, know a few guys who've put them on and been very happy. They do well in tyre test too.

I'd not bother with Falken 452's!

How about Fulda sport control, new but available too order if you wait 2-3 days.

What sort of cars do these people have?

The mention of 452s was that if someone thought they were good enough then I wasn't interested in their opinion :p

Not heard of these Fuldas, got any more info?

Yeh same here, the performance Is there, but they don't really feel 'pointy' enough when steering quickly, compared to a 'sports' tyre. They suit me fine though, I like to brake late sometimes, and I don't think I've managed to get the ABS to kick in more than a handfull of times, whereas it was a bi-weekly occurrence with the previous p6000's.

And they are superb in the wet, as the name would suggest.

Thats because they are not a performance tyre, but neither is a Uniroyal Rainsport.

Dunno my friend has them on her ST and they do fine on the road and on track. Not as good as cs3's but better than premium contacts. I was suprised I tried talking her out of getting them but they seem pretty good.

One has a GT4 and other an EVO X :)

Fulda is part or owned by Goodyear. The new Sport Control suspiciously looks like Goodyear Eagle F1 asymmetric and early test show it to perform like one as well.

Would make business sense, Goodyear now have the F1 V2 to pimp as their best tyre which replaces previous one. As such hand the design/mould of the old one down to sister owned company Fulda to create a great performing budget performance tyre. Let's remember the F1 asymmetric on the whole was a great tyre, now you can buy it cheaper and the only difference is the badge. ;)

Is that the spiel they gave you about them down at quickfit? No way I would be buying them with my money!
