Hi,

Well last night my PSU blew, a very old Type R 580w. Is this a good time to upgrade a tired old system, see sig below. I am thinking of getting the below, what PSU would you recommend? Also will my X1950XTX work okay on the Asus?

Intel Core i5 760 2.80GHz (Lynnfield) (Socket LGA1156)
Asus P7P55D-E Intel P55 (Socket 1156) DDR3 Motherboard
G.Skill RipJaw 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit

Or do i jsut get a PSU and wait for Sandy?

Thanks in advance
Carl

What do you want the system for ie gaming/work etc?

If it is for gaming how about this:

AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition "125W Edition" 3.20GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail £105.74
Antec TruePower New Modular 650W Power Supply £69.99
Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMX4GX3M2A1600C9) £59.98
Asus M4A78LT-M 760G (Socket AM3) DDR3 Motherboard £48.99

And a new gfx card
Asus GeForce GTX 460 Direct CU TOP 768MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with HAWX2 PC-Game £111.61

In fact if my maths are correct you can have this AMD build with the psu and nvidia 460 for the same price as the build you'ce specced if you included the same psu in yours. Assuming your primary use is gaming it has to be the amd build all the way.
I am an AMD fanboi myself but that 460 is a very good price for a massive upgrade over the 1950.

In fact forgeting the psu for a minute the amd build with gfx is approx £325. That intel build wihtout gfx is £310. Get a tidy cpu cooler and that 955 will clock higher nicely.

It will be used for general internet browsing etc and mainly playing css and WoW
So in a nutshell go buy a system now to see a massive boost in performance over my current build?

Although i am a Intel Fan myself i would sooner pay a little more for the Intel gear :)

Thanks for your help

Well for the price you'll pay on intel, if you go the amd route you get the card aswell. From what I understand of wow you should see a good boost as it prefers the green cards. For that use I personally can't see the point of sticking with Intel but of course thats your choice.

Don't forget aswell you could sell many of your current components to offset the costs a bit.
