Another Dell 2407 Thread

Well here is the progression of My monitors in the last few years

Iiyama 17" Master Pro CRT - absolutely fabulous and I also used the componant inputs which improved upon vga a huge amount

17" Hitachi Carbon TFT - OCUK sold absolute buckets of these, so need I say more?

2 * 19" Dell 1905 TFT's direct from Dell before OCUK supplied them - absolutely fabulous and far better than the hitachi

20" Dell 2005 FPW - Equally good at the 1905, but once you try widescreen it gets a little odd using a 4:3 screen again, and trying to use one of each was pretty strange I found

In the last month I have just invested in a 2407 and this blew my mind, worth every penny ( evne though I shouted when I realised there was no power cable) an using this in conjuction with my 2005 is great and the gaming is wonderfully fluid for Me ( mind you with crossfire solution and conroe , it really should be :D )

Now just have to sell my 1905's to get some money back lol

One thing that has annoyed Me is ATI, I bought a third vga card so that I could permanently enable xfire on the 2407 and have my other tft working from the pci card (a 9250) and I thought its going to be simpler that I get an ATI card, but even if you install seperate drivers it refuses to work so not only do i have to keep on enabling / disabling xfire to use my 2nd screen I have a pci card I cant use.

Before Xmas I may try and get a cheapo nv card and see if that works - just hope it doesnt kill everything completely.

It just arrived :D

oh... my... god...

You should see the grin on my face... seriously... It is a thing of beauty. I thought my LG 1710B was a fantastic monitor (indeed so did everyone else who saw it) but this is on another plane. It really has impressed. I would post pics, but my digital camera still won't work I'm afraid.

One happy buyer!

CompactFlash type I/II Card, MicroDrive, Smart Media Card, Memory Stick Card, Memory Stick Pro Card, Memory Stick Duo (with Adapter), Secure Digital Card, MultiMedia Card, Mini Secure Digital (with Adapter)

So no to XD I'm afraid. But you know what? It doesn't matter! This thing is just awesome.

Oh and I seem to be a lucky one, in that I am using DVI and I get precisely no colour banding. Woot!

Lostagain, having owned three mitsubishi's, I'd be intrested in what it is you prefer about the Mitsubushi CRT over this particular panel.?

Thanks muchly

LSP, would you mind telling us what revision number you've got?

I've all but clicked on the buy button now (actually, I did already on Friday, but my order got screwed up, so it didn't end up really ordering one! ;)), but I'm a still a little concerned about the banding issue.

Do you have a digital camera? If so, any chance of some in game pics? Would you run one quick test for me? When loading Windows XP, on the blue welcome screen, can you see banding in the top left hand corner of the screen (where the white turns to blue)? I've heard it really sticks out at you on this screen, so would be interested to know if this is true or not. Any chance of a close up picture of the welcome screen?

If you don't have a cam, if you could just try the welcome screen test out for me and let me know what you think, I'd really appreciate it! I just want to know if it's JUST the anally retentive that see the bands...

Cheers! :)

I got A02 revision (that's all that OcUK sell now) made in Czech Republic.

I have viewed several gradient based images and cannot see any banding at all. I tried out the example of looking at the login screen, however, and did see the smallest example of it. When you said anally retentive... You really would have to be to see it. I'm sure that in this case it is because the image being used is not in natural resolution (therefore dithering can occur, or whatever the word is). You also have to be sat less than a foot from the screen to see it. Why you would want to be that close heaven knows! I have taken photos using my sisters (rather rubbish) digital camera. Do ignore the "banding" you see on the right middle of the screen. That's the digital camera making that. Oh and the lit pixel... I think that is on the camera CCD! My god, I really didnt realise how bad this camera is! Best I have though I'm afraid.

Whole Screen

Close Up

Hope this helps

EDIT:

Took this in the menu of Half Life 2. Again the camera really doesn't do it justice at all I'm afraid.

HF2 is in 1920 x 1200

The menu is basically "in-game" so there is no difference between the menu and the levels. Plus - I can't now I'm afraid, just walking out the door to get horribly drunk and then I'm at Donnington tomorrow so won't be around. If you desperately want some "in-game" shots then I might be able to put something together either tomorrow evening or Monday.

thought i post my question here rather than making another thread.

im really tempted in getting the monitor. Ill be mainly use it for programming and some graphics work, so thats great.
However i also want to play games on it, i havent got a graphics card that will able to handle the full res. Will the 1:1 pixel mapping allow me to play games at the same res i am atm (1280x1024) and the viewable space will be the same as if it was a 17" tft?

It is a truly amazing display in my opinion mate. I was apprehensive about getting one. I switched from a 19" CRT. Now I just simply cannot get enough of it. All my games look fantastic. I even dug out some old games to see what they would look like. Operation flashpoint in 1920x1200 is great. I play mainlky BF2 in 1600x1200 and SWAT4 in 1600x1200. The colour depth is quality. DVD's are superb as well. I would say I was a particularly fussy person when it comes to product quality aand I dont have reservations regarding this display. One of the best things I have spent my 'hard earned' on in a long time. All that extra desktop space in photoshop and illustrator is severly handy. The crispness of the disply is staggering, better than my old CRT. I would never go back.

with the aadvent of overdrive technology manufacturers needed a way of identifying the improvements that they were making in response times. Black > white ISO response times have long since hit a brick wall really, with TN Film panels limited to realistically about 8-10ms, PVA at about 20ms, MVA at about 20 - 25ms and IPS at about 16ms. Some manufacturers still quote both, but grey to gery transitions are a more important indication of response time anyway, since these transitions are far more common than a full white to black (or visa versa) change.

I'd say it was a very good screen, yes. I personally have the 2405FPW and it is a fantastic monitor. The 22407WFP has improved responsiveness, both on paper and in real performance. The colour banding issue (which i have also witnessed first hand on an A00 2007WFP) is a potential problem if you're a colour enthusiast, but i've said this several times before, i'd question whether it would really be an issue in real use. The latest A02/A03 versions have all but eliminated the problem in the "desktop" preset and i just don't think in every day use you would ever notice a problem in this regard. Don't worry about that problem. The design is nice, the functionality and connectivity is vast and varied and the price is extremely good.

There are a couple of niggles remaining which people are bound to moan about, including the lack of 1080i content support over DVI, and a few issues with aspect ratio using component connections. Minor things to be aware of, but nothing massive which i think should really detract from the fact that it is a very good screen.
