Another Dell 2407 Thread

Hey Baddass ... I've got a 2405 too and was pleased with it until I started using a TV card and playing back DVDs. Everything seems related to the inability of the Dell 2405 being unable to handle 50Hz signals (seems fixed at 60Hz). Is there any way around this??? Does the 2407 overcome these problems??? Basically I get very unsmooth/jerky playback.

I have tried allsorts of tricks like overiding the refresh rate in dxdiag forcing windows to display @50Hz using a generic driver. Seems to me that the monitor forces whatever signals it receives into 60Hz.

Seems to me that this monitor is designed mainly for the North American market and they seemed to have forgotten the european PAL systems exist!!!!

Will using MultiRes help?? I have tried fiddling with the service menu but there seems nothing in there to alter the refresh timings.

Is there a hardware/driver hack I can use to get around this problem.

Otherwise I have been happy with the monitor with my only problems being the bright lamp and the 50Hz issue.

Any pics Benny?

What vga card you have?

Hey jdickerson,

Sorry mate have been away for a couple of days. I can post you some screens from SWAT4 & BF2 and of my desktop. Do you have an email addy you can give me. I can't promise an ultra swift turnaround. I will send them though.

Thiis is basically my system at the mo...the GPU does a good job considering.
I was concerned my card wouldn't handle my current games at all at HiRes.
Hl2 truly is amazing at 1920x1200, with most bells and whistles on. Online games I tone down the settings a wee bit. As I prefer Frames over the eye stuff.

hhhmn, not heard that mentioned before as an issue, but can see that it might potentially be a problem. Have you tried a program called "reclock" which let's you specify frame rate of DVD playback? You could use it to manually change it so that frame rate of DVD's was 30fps (ie half your refresh rate @ 60Hz). It's used commonly in HTPC movie playback setup, but might help

A good suggestion baddass.... looks along the right lines. But I have just tried it and it makes it even worse!!!! Seems to be designed to convert 60Hz signals to 50Hz rather than the other way around!! It will also align/sync those 24fps cinema sources to 50/60Hz. I will investigate more later as I have already been bewildered reading the readme file and understanding little!!!! I might of already got the best solution running due to using nvidia purevideo codec and using various deinterlacing options yet it still performs worse than a cheap dvd/tv combo.

Can I somehow force 75Hz on the 2405? That would help with PAL signals I assume. DVI input is fixed to 60Hz I think but the VGA input may be more forgiving.

Anyhow good suggestion Baddass.... Reclock is something I aint come across b4.

Ho hum...

I just got my 2407 and I'm very happy with it :D
Not noticed any of the problems mentioned, the only thing that annoys me so far is that for some reason I can't get HL2/CS: S t owork in 1920x1200, they just drop back to the desktop when oyu apply it and then won't launch! No errors or anything, just gone.
This must be a software problem, so the monitor is fine :D

I feel I may as well chip into this thread.

I got my 2407 today, A02. Made in Czech republic.

First things first: Banding.

In gradient tests there is a small amount of vertical gradients ( I mean a tiny amount) on horizontal ones I couldn't see any.

Games, OMG, if the games support it its gaming nirvana.

Films, see above.

Windows, very nice. Maybe slightly too big, puts abit of strain on the eyes. Solution, sit further back.

Conclusion: Every time I come back to my PC a get huge smile across my face. Turns out money cant buy happiness. Buy it can buy a 2407. Which is happynesss in liquid crystal form.

Brilliant, got to keep reminding myself Christmas is just round the corner (shhh please).

Plus others will want to read your little summary :)

try something like Powerstrip to see if you can force 75Hz as a custom refresh rate. Think you might have some luck on VGA but not on DVI though

Just took delivery of one of these (A02 revision). Things started out so well, the monitor itself is beautiful and once I was running my windows desktop in 1920x1200 I was really impressed. :)

Then I tried it out with some games and the smile left my face! :(

Tried out Quake 3 first, fired it up and it was at 1600x1200 right where I left it when I was using a 19" CRT. The image was stretched 1920x1200, no problem I thought, I'll just open the monitor's menu and select the fixed aspect ratio option... Can you imagine my utter shock to find that the fixed aspect ratios (4:3 and 1:1) are not selectable at 1600x1200! Must be something I'm doing wrong was my first thought, so off to the DELL support forums I go and am shocked at the numerous threads full of issues with the 2407, including the fact that fixed aspect ratios are not selectable at 1600x1200!

So 1600x1200 is ALWAYS going to be streched 1920x1200, a 20% stretch in the horizontal, making all characters look short and fat - unacceptable!

Frankly, I'm amazed that nobody else has mentioned this critical design flaw thus far in this thread (moderation?).

After the shock over no fixed scaling wore off I noticed the horizontal banding too, that was it, back to OcUK you go! I'm in the process of requesting to send it back under the Distance Selling regulations stipulated on the site, once this cursed monitor is gone I'm going to give OcUK the extra ~£100 or so they want for the Samsung 244T, which I've read has neither of these issues.

If you can stand the banding and only wish to play newer games that can support a native 1920x1200 this monitor could still be right for you, but for me it's just simply inadequate.

A lot of games can be hacked in to running your widescreen resolution, check this link:
