Another display backend besides XORG?

When I say it would not be pretty I mean there would be no desktop effects. I know a lot of people turn these off anyway but I like them myself. I think there would also be no video accelleration or am I wrong on that?

From what i understand there's 2D acceleration but not 3D... should be fine for just browsing etc. though.

There's also xfbdev, but i've no idea about that.
