Hey all, some advice appreciated...

I'm selling an iphone 12 on ebay. Listed it Monday morning for 7 days and have a few bids so far and its almost at the price which seems to be the going rate. However, the leading bidder has zero feedback and only registered as a user a week ago. He's obviously set his max bid quite high as he is auto outbidding others. I've been on the site 20 odd years and have a score of 599. Sold loads of stuff over the years and never had a problem apart from sending a T-shirt to Argentina which was completely my own fault.
I like to think I am pretty savvy with it all and can generally spot when something is off, unless something is local pick up I always go through the proper paypal channels etc. I've had no messages from him yet and he may well end up getting outbid or be genuine but it's making me feel uneasy.

What is to stop him winning, paying with paypal, saying the phone doesn't work and sending me back an identical busted one? My understanding is ebay will refund him completely and he gets a new phone for free. Then I am doubly out of pocket. Is there anything I can do to protect myself? I am thinking of changing postage to local pick up only but not sure I can do that now there are bids on it, also going to cut out a large amount of potential buyers.

Thoughts please? :)

I thought you could remove bids from folk below the criteria?

But yeah eBay is garbage is 2023 for selling electronics.

Take a record of the IMIE number of the phone you are sending. If they send a clone back the IMIE won't match. Have photos for proof!

I have actually put a photo in the add with a screenshot of that. I am just concerned that the phone he sends me back might not even boot up to get to that screen.

Do not post if you're concerned.
I'd also just delist from sale.

Its not worth the risk

No matter what you do, if you send the phone, you are at the mercy of the buyer/scammer

can't you just say damaged as you were preparing to post it , and thus cancel winners transaction if you don't like him.

imei # is no good , if he claims it is scratched/damaged , doesn't function correctly, battery nacked ... and tries to hold you to ransom to refund some money.

Remove his bid, change the description of your item to say 10+ positive feedback only thank you.

I have just ended a sale stating the item was now faulty. Same thing with a buyer having low feedback rather than none.

I now have about a grand worth of specialist kit that won’t sell on the MM, or locally. But I would rather it rotted than go through the low level stress of being a seller on eBay. The last few sales ended up having to refund or relist.

Specialist kit, specialist forum?

I had a problem as a buyer on eBay.

The item got "delivered to put building" I don't have a outbuilding and no matter what I can't get my money back. Tried eBay and PayPal. Because the tracking says delivered, there's nothing I can do. I can't even contact Hermies about it. £40 for nothing :(

I'd never sell an expensive phone on eBay.

I only sell low value, non electronic items.

It's just too easy on ebay for someone to claim issues/try a scam with an expensive gadget .

You can set up rules in ebay, so that people with 0 feedback can not bid
I don't think you can, if there is I can't find it

I can only see these options
