Another Enzo bites the big one...

Nasty :(

Seems to be though you might be able to afford to buy one of these, you might not be able to drive one!

Worrying to see yet another Enzo split in half!

After last weeks Porsche crash and the awful way the pictures were plastered over the internet I'm starting to go off looking at car crash threads. :(

I think this was the crash involving that Russian gas billionaire. They said that he was supposedly weaving in and out of 30mph traffic before the crash happened. Must have been one heck of a crash to split the car into 2 pieces. Driver ended up with 70% burns and its touch and go they reckon. Somewhat amazingly his passenger walked away with only minor burns.

Is it true that Enzos are designed to split in half in a big crash? Someone said that on that page but they might have been joking.

Enzo's are design around a monocoque and are supposed to break up.
It's the same as an F1 car - during a crash parts fly off and it looks spectacular but they absorbed the energy from the crash, similar to how a crumple zone works in a road car.

An F1 car isn't designed to split into 2 pieces though unless you're saying that the engine compartment of the Enzo is designed to break away. The monocoque will always remain intact.

In both F1 cars and cars such as the Enzo the engine/rear suspension isn't considered part of the monocoque and is expected to break off in a high speed side on impact. That kind of impact is more likely on the road than on the track due to the presence of trees etc.

By allowing a large proportion of the vehicles mass to seperate you are reducing the amount kinetic energy that the passenger cell has to absorb before it can come to rest.

Why do people keep crashing them? Are they bought by complete numpties, or is the car tricky to drive?

High power + Little experience + Over confidence, probably.

i imagine it inspires confidence - its a damn quick car and thus would be very very easy to get upto silly speeds on the road.... and i'm guessing it doesn't have driver aids for when it goes wrong

Plus they get reported - when was the last time you saw a 360 in the news? yet i'm sure theres been one crashed in the last week or so...

Yeah thats a good point, that will be a factor.

THe SLR, Carrera GT, Enzon and Veyron are so expensive and "select" they will get reported on, plus a rich person/celebrity will likely be driving.

Aren't these the cars that Ferrari themselves have to invite you to buy, you cannot just buy one?

If so why don't they invite people who can drive well!

IIRC ferrari invited people to buy one based on the individuals past purchases at ferrari.

yer, was something along thouse lines - i'm pretty sure they didn't put you round a track and fastest 500 got to buy one ;)

+ the second hand market means anyone can buy one, well anyone with a serious wedge (and i don't mean sand)
