Another EU Gem incoming?

"The various systems proposed by the European Commission are projected to save 25,000 lives over 16 years"

Seems worth it to me.

A serious drop in road casualties may even delay fully autonomous because one of the perceived benefits from autonomous is that they will be safer.
If in normal driving tech can be employed to make the average driver safer then surely thats good

Most already have something which logs the state of the car when the airbags are deployed. But yea, this is one step closer to basically spying on everyone. Next will be GPS tracking which you cannot turn off.

I found the the "speed assistance" thing annoying in a car I borrowed last year, popping up every time you went past a speed sign. Luckily I could switch it off. I guess now you'll need a bit of tape over it's camera lens :D

Same with the emergency braking, it would kick in when it shouldn't (e.g. overtaking parked cars and passing close to oncoming traffic).

This is crazy, they will sell it to the people by saying it keeps them safer, in reality it just allows the powers that be keep you in check. Another freedom gone if it happens.

It's not a step closer to spying on people at all. What utter nonsense.

1) To spy on people using this tech it would take wholesale changes to the EUs data protection and privacy laws. IF you're worried about that, then you should be worried about more than what speed your doing.

2) If "big brother" wanted to spy on drivers, there's enough cameras and APNR to achieve that without.

Still more ammo for the bendy banana brigade.

Looks like your too far gone already, its another way to watch you and keep control over you. Step closer to a police state.

Just like the anti-terror laws...

Oh yea and the EU wanting "back doors" to encryption so they can spy on everyone better.

How would this save any lives at all? all it is doing is making it easier for the Police to prosecute people after an accident.
It would prevent the accident in the first place. I cannot believe "mercenary Keyboard warrior" could be so gullible.

Well lets apply some logic rather than tin foil

Lets say 50% of the drivers speeding today would stop as they could be found to be more liable in an accident. That would directly improve road safety

We have another thread about it, but lets say your insurance is based on having all the safety devices on your car functioning, or you can pay extra if your Lewis Hamilton and think your better without them.

But the main thing they say would be to collect far more data to understand causes better.

Sounds good to me, since having my current car with speed limiter iv found the times i speed has drastically reduced. This would encourage more people to do the same.

We already know most of the causes..... lack of braincells/mobile phones, carelessness and stupidity.

Being boozed up and also speeding account for I think 9 and 7% of all accidents, or figures thereabouts.

I remember my son having a black box on his car when he started driving, certainly made him think more about driving properly. Being free to drive like a tool on the road and break speed limits everywhere is not something people should aspire to.

Don't most cars already log this?

Even my old E39 records the speed at any error activation and deployment of airbags triggers an error activation.
