Another free computer

I have just fitted an SSD I can't seem to find any BOOT options in the BIOS other than boot from Optical Drive or SSD. No USB BOOT Option?

I don't suppose anybody knows how I can boot from the USB? I have Windows 10 on USB

i7 920 DO for me.. 10 years that run solid before i upgraded!
I still run mine in a second PC. They're fine for 99% of things and with an SSD relatively quick too (not lightning obviously, but probably still better than most laptops). There's a slight delay between hitting full screen in Youtube and it actually happening (about half a second) but that's probably down to the almost as old graphics card.

Have you tried updating the BIOS? Replace the BIOS battery first.
I'm not really a fan of updating BIOS's just encase something goes wrong and I end up with a bricked motherboard. I'm sure its something simple in the settings I need to change.

I may just do Windows 7 Lubuntu dual boot on this machine because Windows 10 is a bit garbage. There is always too much going on with Windows 10 if its not doing updates its doing something else slowing the system down. Windows 7 will be good for offline gaming with MS Office and Lubuntu for the internet side of things. I have both on DVD's.

I'm a bit of a sucker for this, I have an old PC that my aunt didn't want any more, overclocked it heavily and then it stopped working, thought I'd knackered the CPU so replaced it with a cheap secondhand one, still no joy so it must be the mobo that has a problem :(

What I would say however is that there is a danger that you take an old machines and go "oh, put a SSD and some more RAM in and it will be great". That may be true, but you've got the outlay on those upgrade components. You get to the point where actually you've spent £50 on something you don't really have much of a use for.

I've got an old system 3570k / 12GB DDR3 / SSD. Spend a fair bit of time moving components around between cases, setting up windows etc. It just sits in my office taking up space, don't think I've booted it in a year.

Got a few old laptops lying around too. I should just get rid really, but I'm a bit of a hoarder when it comes to tech.

The sad thing is, some of the kit I have would be absolutely fine for a basic office machine, web browsing, youtube etc. I just don't know anyone that needs that sort of thing these days.

try a different USB port, on my gigabyte haswell PC my bios looks the same but a different board, some of the USB ports aren't bootable

One of the good things about this era is more people are appreciating the older technology.

The PC from OP would make a good NAS machine at the very least.

Why an earth would somebody chuck this out?

Because dirty old office computers are 10 a penny and for most people not worth the time and effort to try and find a use for. Not that hard to understand.

The sort of cretins you have to deal with on Gumtree/eBay etc....I either sell stuff on the MM or give to a charity shop, or last resort, recyling/bin.

I'm still rocking an i7 920 from 2009/2010? on a LGA 1366 mobo with 6gb of Ram,
it started out with an HD5870, then a 7950 and now an rx580 nitro, it plays GTA5 online at 1080p fine so i'll upgrade when GTA 6 comes out in several years :p

i have a X5650 here if you want it for free.

I figured out the problem this morning. I was trying to boot from a non bootable USB Port. Not all USB ports are bootable on this machine. I got Windows 10 installed and activated straight away. Seeing that I also have an MS Office key I may as well download MS Office. Its very fast. No bad for a free PC.

I've chucked far better PCs than that and many of them. Straight to recycling.

That is a shame. People still pay good money for these on sites like ebay if its a quad core system bidders go crazy for them even if your just selling a motherboard bundle with Ram, processor and cooler. I'd take any old quad core machines if they are going free...

My 2 favourite ever CPU’s are the 2500k and the Q6600. Probably the best ever bang for buck.

I remember paying about £250 for a brand new Nvidia 8800GTS too. Oh those were the days. Life was so simple. No covid, mining or wars to bleed your wallet dry.

I had both of those Cpus for years, both water-cooled with the same modded/ vandalised waterblock. I only upgraded from the 2500k about 3 years ago when it started to struggle with games.
