Another MMO bites the dust, Tabula Rasa closing.

I remember trying the beta for World of Warcraft..... it was rubbish. Look where that ended up :p

It wasn't really. Compared to anything that had come before it was really good. After the game went live there were a lot of queues and bugs that came to light, but the beta really was just a free preview, and Blizzard knew it and treated it as such.

Guild wars did the same with their beta preview weekends. They knew the game was in a fit state to release, they just used the 'beta' to build hype.

I just meant with regards to server stablity which a lot of people moaned about WAR on. There was bits missing anyone remember the Taurens with no mounts ? They just ran fast :p Warlocks didnt have pets.

It wasnt rubbish. But it wasn't great.

I think theres your key point there.
Now WoW is the dominatant game. Everyone is going to compared any mmo to WoW. WoW didnt have that pressure when it got released.

:D

Dj_Jestar Said “EVE will die, just not for a long time to come, by which time they'll have EVE2 on the cards. The skills based system will see to this, it's impossible for new players to ever catch up with old players, and players like me who stop playing but think of going back find themselves in a different league to their old friends who carried on playing and it just doesn't feel the same any more. At least with a max level game you've got an end-game where everyone is at least almost level.”
The lack of end game is the reason Eve is unlikely to die out. There is no hitting max level and getting bored as you’re the same as everyone else. Due to the way Eve works you should still be able to join your friends and be in a league with them.

It’s not really true about new players never catching up. Due to the way the system works a new player can get a bunch of skills to lvl 4 while the old player is working on lvl 5. This lets new players get close and be a threat to old players. Not only that but with limited skills in each area, it’s relatively easy for a new player to max out in an area and match the old player.

Skills didn't bother me, infact i had all the skills i needed to be a mercenary/interdictor pilot. What bored me was the lack on interaction with other people. It's a lonely game. Space is big and empty yes, but that's why it can be dull.

Nail -> Head.

Garriot really did blow it when he consistently left out the feature that made UO such a great MMO - the lack of levels.
Your time was spent raising skills, much like you do in real life. It's not like a halo suddenly appeared around your head and you suddenly felt more proficient in everything you did after making 75 pieces of furniture.

The lack of an endgame in most MMOs is key to longevity. As soon as you start seeing the 'end' of character development, you tend to care less. You only log on to play when you can get better items or experience new things, rather than having a continual adventure.

The other bonus of not having levels is removing some of the 'automatic win' by having bigger numbers than the other guy. If you fight with moxy and catch them off guard, you might score a big kill.

Old timer MMO players will appreciate this, before everything turned into Carebear "Everyone can win!" scenarios.

Agree with Pottsey, EVE i think has the right skill leveling for someone like me who can only really play at weekends. WAR and WOW have one big draw back for me, i cant keep up with anyone who plays in the week and get left behind. One of the main reasons i switch from toon to toon i guess. at least i get to try them all out and just take my time.

EVE is good. new players have only a few months before they can get into something 1/2 decent and go blasting away, maybe a 5 year old char will have more skills, but if you concentrate in one area, like gunnery/spaceship command, within a few months you will have almost the same skills anyway. Maybe not as good, but not as bad as you think.

The next game, which will kill off wow from number 1 slot will be like the Koreans have it. Free to download, free to play, decent game, good graphics, but if you want extra credits or items for you char to speed it up, then you buy them.

At least with eve the upgrades come with the price of the game lol..

Still, shame to see TR going. I enjoyed it.

The other reason Eve is so popular is because there's a lot of skill and knowledge required to fight well. I have a 25m sp toon that's maxed out in amarr stuff, combat recon, cloaking and a load of electronic warfare skills and he still gets his ass spanked by people with half the skill points because I'm basically a bit rubbish at eve combat. But its still hugely enjoyable to try out the millions of different ship configs and see what works.

Basically, it's challenging, rather than instantly gratifying, doesn't try to pretend you're the centre of the universe. Wish a few more games would try that :/

IMO the MMOs that are failing in general losing sight of the fact that their player base is paying to play not just money but also playtime. What I mean by that is that their game needs to be bug free, not demand hardware above that which it should, its content needs to be believeable and lyed out in a way that the belief is not broken. The game needs to have depth not just in machanics but also the setting, world size and story. It needs to be fun and the camera movement and animation needs to be smooth.

The only downside of Eve's skill system is when you start moving onto the 30+ day training times. Its a bit of a game braker.

Of course but it must be better to make a game that has a loyal/steady paying fanbase that makes money for the developer rather than everyone rushing out to buy the next big thing only to quit after the free month.

A bit like WW2 Online, 7 years thats been going, never going to get masses of subscribers but they're quite content with it

EVE is popular for the following reasons:
  • You lose everything you have with you, when you die. Real risk and reward.
  • The in-game economy is player driven.
  • No end-game.
  • Fully player controlled land (space) available. Policed by the players etc.
  • Pew pew lasers and spaceships.
  • Foul play is encouraged. Lying, Stealing, Cheating, Backstabbing etc. are an integral part of EVE. Basically, this game lets people play politics. There are some serious egos in EVE.
