Hi Everyone,
I asked for some advice a couple of years ago for advice on a new build but then came Covid & Miners!
Hence to say it got shelved until now so I'm looking to build or buy a gaming pc for about 2.5K.
I'm aware there's some deals to be has on GPU's at the moment so I've been looking at the 3080 12gb from either Evga, MSI or Asus and I definitely want to go down the AM5 route!
I'm also quite keen on the NR200P or Max as a case but also have a soft spot on the Phanteks Evolv X!
To say I'm in a quandary would be an understatement so any advice you can give would be very welcome.
By the way I'm not very computer savvy but do enjoy playing FPS style games!

Do you think the 3080/90 cards will still be available in a month’s time too?
I cant see the future of course, but put a gun to my head, I'd say 'yes'. You can still buy 20 series cards, so dont see why you wont be able to buy 30 series when next gen cards come out...news were reporting large stock so cant see that disappearing in a month or so...though with a £2.5k budget and a hankering for am5, you should prob be looking at the new gen of GPU's too.

You're probably right about looking at the new GPU's but I guess it all depends on just how expensive they are.
I think everyone would want that crystal ball right now!

A lot of the tech journos are saying you'd be silly to sink a lot of money into a high-end card right now and the rumours are a huge bump for the next-gen (now that they can't just pump out any old crap in an overstuffed market), but I guess time will tell.

Like yourself I've been following all the headlines and I've been waiting for so long I'm desperate to get one, I think it's a case of the heart ruling the head!:D

Ok I've seen some of the reviews of the latest AM5 CPU's and from what I can tell they run super hot and not all that great for gaming either!
This leaves me thinking should I go down the 5800X3D which seems to be the best option other than going Intel which again is power hungry so I'm now a bit bewildered now as to what will be the best move!
Bearing in mind I don't have a rig at the moment should I wait the the 7800X3D due probably January 23 or take the plunge now?

If you're buying new i would wait til october when the cheaper amd 7000 mobos are out and as long as they're like £200 or less i would invest in that . the 7700x is roughly the same on most games and then next year you can just drop in the 7000 series 3d version. You're also going to drop the frame difference with 1440p upwards and a lesser card.

It's mainly the gpu that affects frames. It would definitely invest in the newer platform which you will then have the latest gear for at least a few years by dropping in new cpus etc.

obviously up to you but if you're planning to keep the system for a number of years thats what i would do.

The behaviour of the 7000 series doesn't work the way we're used to thinking. it'll hit 95 but it can be using less watts and the 95 degrees can be using a small area of the cpu so it'll not be pumping out the heat that we're used to seeing. Think of it as a spark plug or the hotspot on a gpu.

I actually think it's quite clever.
