Another New Car Thread ....

Bit of an update -

Noticed the Aux belt was looking a little like a shoe string so changed that on Friday night. Struggled with it because of space but changed it eventually.

Took the car to plans motorsport on Monday and had some unexpected news. They took it around the track and found it handled really really badly, infact said that it was one of the worst he had driven :o. Apparently getting the rear out to play was a pretty much impossible task and the thing just under steered offering no grip at all. TBH i thought something was up but needed someone who knew what they were talking about to check it all over.

WHY you ask

The driver’s side rear shock has failed
Needs the Upper Bushes replacing
Camber is way way way out

And to top all of this off the car has been losing water which i thought was simply the leaky header tank. Noooo even though I have replaced it with a new one from autovaux (which turns out is also leaking :D) it turned out the Radiator has gone :( Common fault because of the plastic caps failing.

Due to the huge expense of parts ALONE I have decided to do most of the work myself so will post loads of pictures etc when I start. The coolant and new radiator will be arriving tomorrow (Pro Alloy one), the coilovers are something i am putting allot of thought into as i really want Nitrons (£1150) but Sachs offer a package for around £700 which are far better for my wallet.

Need to also replace discs and pads which I have decided on, Standard Discs and Mintex 1144 pads. £180 for the lot is a very good price ....

This is going to be an expensive winter, the car is currently under cover in my father’s barn and I’m driving a Renault traffic  you have to laugh eh haha

Wonder how the geometry managed to get so screwed? Spun off a track maybe?

There set up a bit crappy from factory to promote understeer and i guess over 4 years and 38,000 miles it just needs a really good Geo (Apprentley the diffrence evan after a Geo is ment to be mind blowing) So the new coilovers should really improve the car no end.

If you had a failed shock, couldn't you just replace it, rather than doing such a huge overhaul?

You would have to do the two. The standard shocks are bilstein and are not cheap. By the time you have thought about new rears or a complete refurbishment your nearly up there with some coilovers which A. will improve the handling and be more adjustable B. Meens i can get it a little lower and get rid of that arch gap ...

Sorry to hear about the problems Sam. Glad to see you are being positive about it :) and are lucky enough to have the gear to do it all yourself!

Sam, just checked your location and seen your not that far from me at all. If you want a hand mate, give us a shout :)

Yeah I'm sure if he wants to spend 20 hours changing his alternator he'll give you a call ;)

Anyway, good to see you getting stuck in with the mods already :)

Been like that for a while now, when i had my astra i paid £28 delivered for a 6000k set with 12 month warranty :)

diane-shop on ebay is the seller who used to be cheapest, but theres loads on there now that can easily match/beat their prices!
