hiya
i,ve been offered a 2.3 ltr duratec from an R Reg Granada scorpio auto.
i am thinking of putting it in my mk2 escort project with a pair of throttle boddies and a megasquirt ecu.
just wondered what the 2.3 engines were like from the granada's i know the earlier 2.0 ltr i4 8 valve lump they put in the sierra's was ok but this is a twin cam 16 valve.
anyone played with these engines before.

Pretty damn good engines tbh. I was driving an auto box strapped to one with 159k on the clock and it was still fine. 140bhp iirc and the best of the 3 scorpio engines. The 2.9 is very heavy and very little power gain whilst drinking petrol like an alc in weatherspoons consumes brown ale.

cheers for input guys sounds like a good base engine for a project then.
i was going to use jenvey or bike throttle bodies with megasquirt v3 ecu.
i would be happy for around 180-200bhp using a mt75 gearbox and a capri 3.09 axle

IIRC the Scorpio OR the Granada was never fitted with a Duratec - that's a much, much later engine. The Scorpio came with either:

- 1.8 L 4cyl DOHC
- 2.0 L 4cyl DOHC
- 2.4 L 12v V6
- 2.9 L 12v V6
- 2.9 24v Cosworth V6

So what you've got either isn't from a Scorpio, or is one of the above :)

The Duratec, regardless, is quite a good engine for tuning with as you state, a reasonable top BHP (reasonable meaning "not costing tens of thousands") of around 230BHP. Usually this can be attained with fresh cams, pistons, rods, bottom end bolts, proper timing and a decent fuelling system.

It is, however, a very tall engine. May be worth checking out :)

definetly a 2.3 engine 16 valve so *** engine is it

Well...the 2.3 was fitted to some Mazdas, but in European spec I think it was just Ford Galaxies? My mind suggests it was in some Mondeos too, but I'm not sure that's right :D ....American Foci have it too :)

Good engine regardless

If, somehow, it transpires to be the 2.0 16 valve DOHC from a Scorpio - it's a good, tough engine but there are zero tuning options for it, so steer clear :)

Sorry but thats just completely untrue - the Ford Scorpio did indeed receive the 2.3 16v engine in the 94-98 model.

It never appeared in any Mondeo.

My mistake :)

Never realised it recieved that powerplant. Seems to be very little info on it! It's odd because no-one seems to have picked up on that fact...easy source for RWD transplants in that case

I find very few references to it online. Seems to be a not-very present model? Even the owners club doesn't list it :D

No need to be so dashingly negative Fox :( :p

is it worth buying as i have had trouble myself finding any info about it being in a granada.
am i right in saying it is an i4 engine similar to the escort mk5 rs 2000

....the 'I4' 8 valve DOHC engine used in the Sierra and Scorpio as the base for the RS2000 engine. Fitted with a new Ford developed 16 valve head this engine produced 150hp. As opposite to other Ford overhead cam engines, this engine used chain driven camshafts. Tubular exhaust manifold was quite good design when compared to usual Ford cast iron manifolds.

I don't think the Duratec and RS2000 lump have much in common - besides the fact they've got 16 valves, 4 cylinders and an inline configuration :p . Why? Thinking of a transplant?..........Fooooxxx??

just the fact that i can buy a 16 valve 2.3 granada engine cheaper than a 8 valve i4 equivalent from a sierra.

I believe the 2.3 DOHC is a developement of the old 2.0DOHC. In any case, it's definately not a Duratec, would snap the blokes arm of it it was! The 2.3L engine 145bhp in stock form, and probably plenty of torque but I suspect the amount of aftermarket tuning parts is virtualy non-existant (just like the 2.0DOHC).

A 20XE is likely to be a better option in your Mk2 (and a well tried and tested one), more power in stock form and plenty more power can be released with just carbs or throttle bodies. Getting cheap to buy now as more rotten Cavs, Calibras and Astras are being scrapped.

It seems there is a 2.3 Duratec, but burton power think it was only available in the US.
The Duratec HE engine is the latest 4 cylinder engine from Fords that, due to its near perfect dimensions and characteristics, provides an ideal platform for a performance engine that can be modified with relative ease. Built around an aluminium block, these engines weigh around 92kg (less clutch and alternator). As a natural progression from the Zetec E engine, the Duratec HE is rapidly becoming a popular transplant engine for classic RWD cars and kit cars. We are therefore able to supply most conversion parts for such applications (as we already provide for the Zetec E), along with a range of modified engine components. This engine has currently only been fitted to Mondeo models produced after 2001 and is available in 1.8 and 2.0 capacities. A 2.3 version is also produced in the USA. It should not be confused with the Duratec V6 Mondeo engine or the new Duratec 1.3 and 1.6 SOHC engines that are being fitted to the latest Ka and StreetKa models (nice one Fords!!)

ok peeps thanks for your input i will give the engine a miss.
just fancy something different in the old girl i thought about the zetec route but i have already put a 2.0ltr one in my fiesta with the mondeo 136ps ecu just for a cheepie run about.
is it worth going the NA cossie route as i already have a head sitting in the garage and an old 2.0ltr 205 pinto engine sitting in the mk2 escort.
