A reason to wear a tinfoil hat would be a more suitable title.

i hate this crap

do people really think microsoft are spying on everyone

can't wait to see the first $

Oh this makes me giggle. What a load of crap.

I'm just reading the list of services and I noticed:

You can also volunteer your name, email address, country and even address to Microsoft through the registration process.

What software doesn't offer registration?

The whole article is clearly sensationalist and making voluntary processes sound like spying.

Surely if you read and understood the article you'd realise this was a non-news story and avoid posting it on here?

Im probably the worst sod around for falling for the ANTI-VISTA blogs I keep seeing and even I am growing weary of the same old junk stories coming up time and time again and Im bored of them myself, so thats says a lot.

Almost every bit of software you buy these days has some way of letting you opt in ( or out ) of something and no, Vista is no different.

If you give your name and addy, then thats fine...

If you dont, then thats fine too! - they DONT magically aquire your personal info by the use of dozens of little apps etc... And for me to say that, is a big deal... Trust me on that.

How about Google? MSN? Pretty much ANY and EVERY search engine . . Web sites hold cookies, in fact, pretty much anything on the internet holds information about your surfing habits, pr0n habits, user data, isp data, pr0n data (Wait, i did that twice . . . :p ). So its unfair to single out Vista, so you dont want to use it, fine. Dont. I remember all of this from win 95 --> win 98 --> win 2000 and ESPECIALLY Win XP.

Google harvests more in one day than Microsoft has in their entire life.

I doubt that..

However... In a kind of contradiction, I would not be at all surprised either!

It kind of helps explain why google has become such a massive force in the internet & business world... They aint shy of a few bob.

Google are the privacy-invasion kings, my friend :) The earn billions from it.

You won't believe how much data they can learn from a single cookie dropped on your PC as soon as you visit Google.com. And with their G-mail, Maps and all the rest of it services now they have a way to "relink" up the cookie UUIDs in the event you format your PC. As soon as you logon to your Google account again they link up the cookie UUIDs and they have all your history in one profile again.

very true

people forget this..

OS's changes for the better.. if u like what u have, nobody is forceing u to change it...

Oh I don't know, I used to be very anti vista last night. I have been using XP for a lot of the time since vista came out. But I thought, ummm I may as well install it. I have now got it setup how I like it, It's generally faster than XP at booting up and when in the OS I don't see any slowness I found XP to be slow.
Plus I am normally on the MS IS REALLY BAD !1!1!!1!!1 bandwagon. But it's what the world of computing is like now, most jobs involve Microsoft training. But I think people hate them because they are just rich and put to many extras in there OS which people think are not needed.

Whilst the article may indeed be sensational I find it unfair for the Pro-MS people to mock the OP. He is obviously concerned about his invasion of privacy, and rightly so.

In a world where you digital ID is valuable, we should all be concerned what data is held about is by 3rd parties. This includes business, organisations, the police and the government.

The difference between Google and MS is that you can easily use another search engine whilst changing OS is not always possible. Personally I don't see why they should collect all that information without first asking my permission.

Ultimately it boils down to who controls my information. I should have the final say about what data is collected by third parties from my PC. I also want to know what data is collected and what it is going to be used for. Then, and only then can I make a decision if I should allow them to use that data. I also don't believe it should be written into the EULA that I have to concede control of my data either. (before anyone comes up with the EULA as an excuse)

Saying Google is worse than MS does not excuse MS from harvesting data from my machine. Let's have a sensible debate about privacy and not turn it into a mindless bashing.

exception > google.com > ban cookies :)

Anyway as for the article, load of rubbish, I cant think of any program that doesn't try to transmit data back to it's creators. Usually only usage stats, crash logs ect.
