Sorry to start another supplements thread guys, but anyway here goes:

I've been on a weight loss drive for the past 10 weeks (lost ~45lbs), and I'm moving into the last 10-15lbs so I'm looking to increase my calorie intake to slowdown my weight loss. Right now I'm cutting down on the long-duration rowing machine work, and have started to mix in some weights and swimming. When I've lost the remaining fat I'll be concentrating on muscle-building work (mainly with free weights). I know there's loads of good information on these forums from Chong, Morba and co so I'm trawling through and learning plenty.

Anyway... I'm looking to place a fairly large myprotein order to get me started, and was hoping someone could give me a first-order-discount code? :)

I'm planning to order:

* 10kg unflavoured whey (planning to flavour with blended frozen berries if I can't stomach the taste)
* Omega 3 supplements (probably around 500 tabs total)
* Green tea extract (One 360 unit tub, probably)

Basically, I'm wondering what else people would recommend I go for? I'm not interested in using creatine yet - I'll move down that road in a few months when my "honeymoon period" is coming to an end. I'm very much open to suggestions... Glucosamine perhaps?

On an unrelated note - I seem to find that when lifting (either free weights or machines) my forearms become tired with any of the lifts, often more so than the muscles I'm trying to target. What could I be doing wrong? My forearms are already pretty big compared to other muscles, so I doubt it's just a lack of strength.

Thanks guys :)

Thanks for the tip :)

Do you think glucosamine is neccesary for the first few months, or is it something I should add in later on?

edit to your edit - Because I'm a noob to all this and I don't fully understand its purpose :o Actually I do have achy joints, but I'm guessing that's to do with excessive cardio work recently :p

Other things you could consider buying and are in my opinion worth it :)

Grape Seed Extract - 100g of this will last you about 2 years. VERY potent antioxidant and also good for joints :)
Vitamin C
ALCAR - This is a good pre workout booster and highly rated at metabolizing bodyfat. Needs taking in doses of about 1.5g 3x times per day.

I don't rate glucosamine on it's own but it's very good when stacked with Chondroitin. Also MSM is so cheap you should get that aswell, this is possibly the most potent joint formula available ;)

Thing is Chondroitin isn't cheap, go and check high street prices

I buy 200g glucosamine, 200g MSM and 100g Chondroitin at a time and mix them all together for a 2:2:1 ratio. I take 2g of this mix everyday and it's fantastic  It's a LOT cheaper than any high street prices aswell but still about £25 for that amount!

Why not?

The ALCAR seems fairly cheap for the quantity recommended to use, and regarding the grape seed extract I'm all for antioxidents (hence the green tea extract).

edit - the whey protein I was planning to order is this stuff:

http://www.myprotein.co.uk/bulk-powders/protein-powders/mypro-whey-protein/

Good plan?

I think I might lay off the glucosamine and other joint formulas for now, and see how I hold up for a couple of months when I move fully to the lifting.

Why not glucosamine on it's own? From personal experience. I used it for 6 months and it did nothing until I was recommended to stack it with Chondroitin. I read a few articles and they work synergistically.

Chondroitin also has many other fantastic health benefits. I believe it's good for clearing arteries of plaque build up for example.

Sorry, I meant "why not" as in "Might as well go for the ALCR and grape seed extract as well I suppose" :p

...I was slow posting, you got another post in between :p

Don't order your whey like that. Use the pricematcher with the site I mentioned earlier and you'll see this:

5kg Whey Protein 80 (EURO) [tubbed] £31.95

Get that ;)

Will do fella :)

Personally, i wouldn't get too carried away with the supplements. There's a lot of BS info around about their supposed benefits, most of its a scam if you ask me. Some of the stuff is possibly bad for your long term health too.

Boosting your protein intake with protein drinks is a good idea though :)

Okay, placed my order.

I did a bit of research on the ALCAR, and wasn't really conviced there is a lot of evidence for its supposed benefits. Given that was about £25 for 500g, I decided to give it a miss.

I did decide to go for the glucosamine, MSM, Chondroitin mix though. My knees were particularly sore this morning (1hr swimming and 1hr rowing machine yesterday might have something to do with this :p), so I thought 'what the hell'.

So, to last me around 120 days or so I ordered:

5kg of Whey Protein Concentrate 80 (EURO) x2
Omega-3 x 200 Softgels [tubbed] (special offer) x 4
Green Tea Extract x 120 Tablets (tablets are cheap enough and avoid the need for measuring)
Grape Seed Extract (100g)
Chondroitin Sulphate (100g)
MSM Powder (200g)
Glucosamine Sulphate (200g)

Also:
Padded Lifting Straps
Myprotein Mixchamp Shaker
Plastic Scoop (Small) and Plastic Scoop (Large)

I already have a high-precision digital scales (my past experience as a dope-grower coming in handy there :p), so measuring should be okay.

Thanks for all your help, Chong :) I used your code so hopefully you get some reward points from my order.

hehe, the only reason anyone gives advice on these forums is to get people to use their promotional code.

if you agree with this post then you get access to a special 1 time offer code.

MP31467

use it, its 5 whole percent off your first order! you ain't gonna get that kind of offer anywhere else.

It's not exactly a huge reward that the referrer gets. Chong will have recieved around £1 from my order (which was a fairly large one) - he's not exactly raking it in, given the amount of time he spends helping people on this forum.

Besides, who is going to sniff at a 5% off offer? It's effectively free money if you're placing an order anyway.

Good decision, there's no way I'd spend that much on it! :)

I suppose I should have made it a little clearer but I was only meaning 100g worth. Blast it when looking to drop bodyfat for a little help, works well with green tea. I wouldn't take it for long periods anyway so 100g is perfect.

That combo should be lasting you about 6 months, maybe longer depending on dosage. This is one of the best things to buy from MP and offers the biggest saving over high street street prices. To buy that much from high street would have cost you about the same as your whole order! ;)

If I'd known you wanted this much protein I would have said get 5kg whey & 5kg Milk Protein, this is what I always order.
Omega-3 x 200 Softgels [tubbed] (special offer) x 4
Aim for at least 10g per day of fish oil. Try and get some from oily fish and then top up with these to hit 10g.
Green Tea Extract x 120 Tablets (tablets are cheap enough and avoid the need for measuring)
I know it says take 1 on the site but take 2 in the morning for a better effect
Grape Seed Extract (100g)
200mg-300mg of this in PWO shake does wonders for helping with DOMS and other aches and pains. I'd honestly rate this as the best antioxidant PWO.

Some comments in green. You've made some very good purchases there imho that will definately help you as things start getting tougher as you get closer to your goal. Wish I'd known you was going to buy so much protein, nothing wrong with the whey but milk protein is just as helpful. Having one of each is great for using them to their strengths and reducing each others weakness.

Main problem with whey is the sheer speed it goes through your system. Always take it with some fats to slow it down (except PWO when it's perfect)
A good one is go to Tesco and pick up some organic flaxseed powder (it's cheaper there than MP!) for just £5 and mix 10g of this in with your whey shakes. 25% fibre and full of Omega-3 aswell, it's good stuff.

Oh well, nevermind. I love milk anyway, and (when not dieting like now... ) go through about a litre per day. Yeah - that's 50g sugar, I know, but oh well :p at least I should be getting a fair amount of milk protein along with it (~50g also).

Will do.

I wouldn't risk these kind of supplements, who knows what long term damage they could do?

Grape seed has not been evaluated by the FDA for safety, effectiveness, or purity. All potential risks and/or advantages of grape seed may not be known. Additionally, there are no regulated manufacturing standards in place for these compounds. There have been instances where herbal/health supplements have been sold which were contaminated with toxic metals or other drugs.

^^^ and this applies to all supplements.

Also, while drinking green tea may be beneficial to your health, studies are showing that high concentration dosage(green tea extract) may help tumour growth! I'd be very wary.

http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/21150.php

The problem is that there's been no proper long term studies of these 'health' supplements.

The body takes all the nutrients it needs from the food we eat and has done for millions of years. Common sense tells you that we don't need high concentrations of nutrients in our systems. The body will treat them as poison and could cause liver damage or god knows what else.

Some more info people should read before putting pills and powders into their bodies.
