Another title for Murray

So glad he won the Paris Masters as otherwise his usual detractors would be saying he only got to #1 because of Raonic's withdrawal. Which is nonsense of course given all the hard work he puts in. But he's silenced that anyway.

Reaching World #1 is a huge achievement, probably more than anything else he's achieved - and 2x Wimbledon, 3 x Grand Slams, 2 x Olympic Gold, Davis Cup Winner is already an incredible portfolio.

And he's done all this in an era full of greats such as Djokovic, Federer and Nadal. he deserves all the credit that comes his way.

Congratulations to Murray. After watching Wimbledon in the 70s/80s when men's tennis here was a complete backwater, I never thought I'd see the day when we'd have a Brit winning grand slams and being the world number one.

Big, big achievement and well deserved.

Close game with isner but Andy has been very consistent. The difficult part is staying at the top which I don't think he will be able to do in the way the other greats were able to.

He's the last one of the 'big 4' to make it to number one in the rankings think this might be his turn at the head of the table.

Just needs to pad that Grand Slam record out the next couple of years now, 3 isn't a big enough return for a player of his quality. Now 2 of the big 4 have dropped off he has his chance.

Is there a period where he'd have to remain at #1 to be a great? It almost sounds like a moving of the goalposts again and maybe in one sense that's reasonable, I'm almost certain that having reached #1 Mr Murray is now looking to extend his reign for as long as possible. However there's something to be said for taking a moment to recognise that he's done something no British tennis player has ever done. And he's done it in an era with three of arguably the greatest champions ever.

I think you've also got to respect that he has kept working at improving himself and his game for years, just striving for that little bit extra which makes the difference between a very good player and being a champion - you can point to any number of sports stars who have significant talent but for whatever reason don't quite make it to being the best while he's kept going to make those small adjustments and he hasn't been afraid to change things up when needed. Here's hoping he can add to his tally of grand slams too.

but he's done it when 1 of the 3 isn't even in the top 10 now, nadal is likely to join feds pretty soon, and djokovic is out of sorts at the moment.

i'm not taking away from him being no1, at least hes won some of the majors, unlike with the womens game, but for me hes missed being a "great" purely because he hasn't had the upper hand of the other 3, whereas they have at one time or another over the past few years.

i'll take some of that back if djoks gets back to top form and then murray does him over consistantly in the majors.

Murray got there through his own sheer will and determination. I think Novac is a better player technically but not tactically. Murray for me is the best tactical player in the game. He knows the shots to play and he is for me the best returner in the game at the moment. And he has a steely determination (that Novac used to have) to never give up.

Nadal's injury problems are Nadal's and the way he plays...earlier when he was dominating in his career there was talk then that because of the way he played he would have to answer for it later down the line and that has come true unfortunately.

Djokovic - will perhaps now fight back to rediscover some of his best form. Recently has been hit by injuries. It will be a good battle between him and Murray to fight for number 1 spot.

One of AM's greatest assets is his adaptability and learning focus. A very intelligent player imo. Its not Murray's fault that the rest of the big four cant last the pace for one reason or another. Its staying power you need and he has it in spades....though Djokovic will be back i reckon.

Just coasted to a third Shanghai masters title. The rankings are false right now. Murray is without doubt the best tennis player in the world atm.

Unless Djokovic can get his act together, I can see him just steamrolling everything from now on.

Enjoy him while you can.

No arguments now. The rankings don't lie, the greatest tennis player in the world is a Brit!

Really happy for Murray though, can't wait to see if he can perform to his potential at the Australian.

Murray's fitness levels are ridiculous. Longest ever game in the group stage, played last night and another long game this afternoon. If, and it's a big if, he makes it through to the final he'll be spent :(

Edit: Murray wins! What a ****ing epic match

I wonder what the shortest amount time a player has spent at number one. Andy might be that player if he doesn't beat Novak.

Nah, he's already beaten Pat Rafter and is drawing with Carlos Moya (List of #1s and time there). Djokovic looks to be hitting good form now though and has spent a lot less time on court recently so it wouldn't be a surprise if he takes back the #1 slot now. In some ways that would feel a bit odd as for the past six months he hasn't been the best tennis player in the World but it's a year long ranking and he was definitely the best before that. However that does also mean he has a lot more points to lose in the early part of the next tennis year so if Mr Murray can maintain his form into next year he has a fair chance of keeping/re-taking the top slot.
