Howdy all. In a bit of dilemma. I think my a64 x3800 is starting to feel a little old in the tooth and noticed that there are some bargains once in a while to be had a on certain auction site so probably going to stick with my setup and get a new cpu.

What i'm really unsure of is whether to go for a dual core 939 or a FX cpu. Not really into overclocking so will run at stock.

I have asus a8n-m mobo
3 gig ram,pc 3200
256 x1950 pro
a64 x3800 CPU
Vista home premium.

All opinions greatfully received. Cheers!

a dual core x2 would be best, the fx chips are a waste of money

something like an 3800 x2 or a dual opteron chip would your best bet

I say go for an Opteron 170 or 175. I would have said the 165 but I do not think your mobo will work well with the 9x multi.

Any X2 (from 4200 up to 4800) will do the job for you. The problem is, they could not be found easily nowadays. Opterons run nicely, great overclockers, but given that you do not OC, you would be looking at 175, 180 or even 185 (the latter is a bit pricey). 180 could be found (retail) for ca. 170, while 185 is around 220. This however will give you another year, year and a half before the next major upgrade.

There is no point in going the FX route, too power hungry and no multitasking.

You will see some nice boost from having a Dual Core.

Ok so i'm looking more at the Opterons now, only problem is i don't have a clue if my system would be any use for overclocking. The ram i have is generic and i don't know if my motherboard is any good in particular for OC'ing? Anyone shine any light on this for me please before i decide to purchase one or not.

Thanks again.

3Gb Made up of 2x1b and 2x512Mbs?

Your probably running at 2T and rubbish timings, ditch the 512Mbs.

That mobo should do atleast 250HTT with a 166 divider.

Thats 2.5ghz with a x10 multi or 2.75 with a 11x multi.

if your not interested in clocking. try and sourse a 4800+ if you have ~£200 to spend, else just look for the most mhz you can afford (opteron or x2 939. if your not oc it makes no diference. theres very little speed difference between the 4600+ (512K L2/core @ 2400mhz) and the 4800+ (1024K L2/core @ 2400mhz) other than a potential slab of cash in your pocket...

My FX55 Clawhammer copes with everything fine? My idel temps are 26c-30c, load is about 45c. I think I will be keeping my fx for another year yet and Ive all ready had it for 27months. Quite a good length of time to keep a cpu hey guys?

I must have missed all those "bargains" :D

Last time I checked, x2 3800+ were going for about £80, when you can buy them new for not much more than that.

The other thing is, as you probably know, to ignore all prices for any auction with >5 hours left to run. Nobody bids until the last day, and most of the bidding goes on in the last 5 mins. Bargains one day, overpriced cons the next

My Opteron 146 will hit 2.8Ghz, but I keep it at 2.7 for stabilities sake (9x300) on a cheapo ASRock motherboard.. oh, and on water cooling.

HTH

I have a 165@ 2.8ghz at 1.375v under a scythe ninja! Runs fine for 6-7 hours a day every day! Plus that and the DFI board only cost me £130 - great upgrade! A 175 will do you very proud! ;)

It is turning out to be quite expensive picking up X2s for S939 atm, worked out at £150 for me including p&p, for a 4400, which in my eyes is bearable but only just. Once my god damn exams are over I should be able to focus some time on clocking it and hopefully getting my moneys worth :D

It runs damn cool in my shuttle though only 35-40 under load and sub 30 idle!

See I wouldn't bother at that price. Why not get the Asrock board and a C2D for the same money?

unless im mistaked, his current ram wont work with c2d (being as its DDR not DDR2) which ammounts to a couple hundred more bob...

*edit*

just looked at board, has support for both memory types. so...
how about the ease of upgrade - drop in new cpu, install amd driver, go.
no strip down and remove mobo, reinstall windows, drivers, apps...

as mentioned, oc isnt really going to be done, does a c2d + mobo for same price give same or better performance? id be a little suprised if it did..
