Hi all,

I was just wanting to know when it comes to SSD drives, are they the same as other drives? I mean if you buy a IDE/SATA drive and it's say 160gb you infact only get around 149gb of space that you can use, why is that? I mean if you was to fill your car with fuel and you wanted 30 litres and only got say 24 you wouldn't be to happy about that, so why is it the norm when it comes to HD's. :(

I am building a new rig and I just wanted to know if SSD are the same as other drives, as the price of them is still quite high and I want to know what would be the best drive to install. :)

Yes, they are the same. The reason is because of the differences in which Windows and drive manufacturers count bytes. Drive manufacturers count their drive capacities in decimal, 1000 bytes per kilobyte and so on. Windows counts capacity in binary, 1024 bytes in a kilobyte. This is where the reduction in storage comes from.

as Spoffle says, its the same as any normal HDD just faster read and write speeds and no moving parts so no noise from the SSD like you get from HDDs

I have a Samsung evo 840 250GB drive but shows as 232GB usable

Cheers for that, :)

I guess I will give SSD ago then, and thanks for letting me know about the bites issue as it was just one of them things that always puzzled me:o

Your best bet if your limited on budget is to use your SSD mainly for your operating system and use a normal drive for all the usual crap we all end up filling drives with, although if you can afford more ssd's for this charge on :)

Cheers for the advice guys, I will seek to get 2 SSD's then. :)
Why two? :o

Most people tend to use one SSD to install their operating system on and then one standard HDD for a data drive.

I personally use a 120gb Samsung 840 EVO and a 1TB WD Blue HDD.

I have the OS and the main games I play installed on my SSD and the rest installed on my HDD along with all my data stuff. :)

^ thanks, that makes more sense i guess. I am so out of date with all this new stuff  As you can see from my sig, I am using really old gear at the mo. :)

SSD's are the greatest thing since sliced bread, My desktop takes 6 seconds to start up and an old old old Sony Vaio now works like never before(just a shame about the Sony/NVidia drivers issue)
