what are you guys doing for anti spam for exchange?

Hosted?
Gateway box?
Exchange Plugin?

Any recommendations, having real problems with spam and spamassassin doesn't seem to be coping anymore!

I've just implemented Websense Hosted Email Security and it does a good job but to be honest any of the big players are going to be pretty much on par with each other and it'll come down to cost per seat.

I've also implemented the Symantec Mail Security Gateway device and that did a brilliant job. Got them at a good price per seat so for that solution it made sense.

A great solution I've seen is the Barracuda Spam Firewall from Barracuda Networks. It's essentially an inline firewall that deals with SMTP traffic.

Postfix with MailScanner and Spamassassin on an external box here, scans it and then forwards to our exchange, saves downloading all the spam on our ADSL line. When you say spamassassin isnt working anymore, are you sure the bayesian filter is actually learning? I Had a problem a while back where the db was corrupt and it never learned. I had to re-initialise the database and start again, but have over 2M messages in the database now. might be worth runnind a debug on SA and checking that the spam and nspam count is increasing with each message.

Take a look at ironport. We tested it in work as our antispam is about to exprie.

I found it to be a nice bit of gear if i am honest.

I have also tested the Barracuda and icritical both were very good.

On the appliance front Ironport is the best available and can be had for a good price now, Barracuda is okay and cheaper (it uses open source AV and Anti-spam so should be!). Clearswift's appliance is okay but a bit more complicated (useful if you need advanced content checking though).

Not many people use software now but Marshal is pretty good.

Managed services are all pretty good, some now offer some cool DR functionality (Mimecast) but any of the bigger players are good (BlackSpider (now Websense), Postini (now google) or MessageLabs (soon to be Symantec).

The company I work for sells all of these and if it were my money I would buy Ironport if I wanted an in house solution or Mimecast if I wanted to outsource.

Hope that helps!

Ultimately I suppose it depends on how much mail you have. If you have thousands of users an applicance would be a good choice, for anything less then it may be more cost effective to purchase a hosted solution.

i've recently put a smallish (40 maiboxes) customers sbs2003 box behind sercuretide offered by a company called appriver. very pleased with the results, and it's only a few hundred quid per year.

you might be on to something there :o Did notice some logging problems a while ago but thought nothing of it

I did give mailscanner a try although using sendmail, seemed to be a nice bit of kit but i wanted to see what the other options were before implementing it (esp seeing as its spamassassin based)

Have used Trend's hosted service (Interscan Messaging Hosted or something like that) for a small site with SBS. Works well based on user feedback.

Bigger sites we use SonicWall E-Mail Security Appliances. Again, works well. Currently have them under test for a mail project which handles approx 100 million e-mails a month.
