Any 74 plate car (maybe Lexus) owners? Speed limit warning

Hi all,

My mum is looking at ordering a Lexus NX350h, or maybe a '24 Merc GLC (though test drive yesterday revealed it's annoyingly jiggly suspension).

With this new mandated EU speed limiter from July-24 onwards, which must be switched off every time you start the car, would this put any people off that have a brand new car? How invasive is it? Particularly interested in the two manufacturers above, but any experiences would be nice...

Thanks

My 2020 Megane RS had it. To answer your question, do you drive around breaking the speed limit constantly? Or do you aim to stay at or under the limit?

It’s a bit annoying. Can be turned off after each key-on manually I think. Probably get used to it eventually or just turn off as part of start up routine. On my Ford it can be disabled from the steering wheel, which is nice.

Annoying when in a 30 zone but the sensor picks up a sign from a side street saying it’s a 20 zone and keeps pinging because you’re driving to the actual limit

Wait a sec, you're telling me that you can turn this off in the menu?!
Most (maybe all) have the ability to turn this off, but only everytime you start the car as far as I'm aware.

I've a new Toyota and the bong-bong-bong if you go over the limit isn't too loud, it also gives a bong for speed camera warning signs. The system is patchy though, as mentioned before will pick up side street signs, also seems to refer to out of date GPS data on mine and isn't smart enough to deal with temporary limits (eg outside schools in the morning and in the afternoon).

It's fine if your car reads the correct speed limits, I'm yet to be in a car that's got it right enough of the time to not be a nuisance.

60mph sticker on the back of a van in front of you? Bing bong.
20mph sign on a road you didn't go down? Bing bong.

Thankfully the daily has an option to map a button on the steering wheel as a shortcut to disable them.

I've actually been surprised how well it works in my Qashqai, aside from occasionally being a little delayed into a new limit it very rarely gets it wrong - I can't actually remember the last time it has, my parent's VWs have been alright, I've been in a few cars, ironically much higher end ones, where it really doesn't work well at all though - picking up stickers on vans and buses, etc. all the time.

My new works Transit Custom does this, and to be fair the majority of the time its not an issue. The problems usually come when going through roadworks where it sometimes picks of the work site's speed limit, usually 5mph, or in carparks where again its usually 5/10mph. Fortunately on the Transit its as easy as holding down the limiter switch on the steering wheel to turn it on/off. More annoying is the driver awareness bongs which seems to have a mind of its own and requires you to go though few menus in order to turn it off.

Yeah dad's new Honda does it. Bing bongs as soon as you go 1mph over. To turn it off you have to disable the entire traffic sign recognition system, each and every time you start up. And can't be done once driving so if you forget then that's it.

Find where it's camera is and stick some tape of it.

It will be fun once they force an actual speed limit on the car. It loves to pick up all sorts of random side roads etc.

They won't do this until the tech becomes a lot better. At the moment it's just not reliable enough.
As others have said, my Mazda frequently gets it wrong. The most annoying was when I was in France and there are signs for different classes of vehicle. It would pick them up and bong at me that I was speeding even though the limit it was displaying was for HGVs.

I thought the ever wise EU had already set a date for it :/
