Any advantage to sata SSDs vs NVME?

Hi all,

1st post on this account, I’m sure I had an account years back but I’ll be damned if i can recall the details i used.

Anyway I’ve been thinking of adding some extra storage (currently have a 2tb nvme drive). I’m wondering if there’s any advantage to using sata ssds over nvme as the prices for decent ones don’t seem to differ that much?

I know nvme is much, much faster but will run hotter. Are there use cases where sata drives would be your preferred option?

At the moment I use it for gaming and some coding work (noting too serious right now as I’m retraining into a tech role currently).

Fair enough, i was struggling to think of an advantage other than a small cost advantage.

I have a spare nvme slot, although iirc it will only run with limted pcie lanes due to using the main slot but still faster than sata 3. Plus no cable to manage, which is always a bonus.

NVME for sure for OS but it’s a newish tech so bit more expensive.

SSDs for quick cheapish storage solutions.

IMO.

This..

Pricing now is not that different for m.2/sata, you should have a fast OS and app's drive.
then for mass storage say games.. what ever is cheap at that time.

i have 1tb pcie4 boot, then 2 x 2tb pcie3 drives for games and stuff, the only reson i got the pcie drives is no cables to run and the offer price made then the same price is sata.

Not as big as the jump from HDD to SSD.

I'd use, and do use M.2 pcie4 drives for OS, but I have a bunch of older sata ssd for game drives and media storage.

I only use my old HDD's for cold storage these days, as even cheap SSD's are cheap.

For games and most general use there is no noticeable difference in speed between the two.

Nvme has advantages though, tidier in your build and less room needed, plus no cable which although very slim is a potential fail/issue point.

There is not much different in price.

On my build I have a 2tb pcie4 nvme, and then a 1tb SATA SSD I re-used.

I'd recommend if you are thinking about getting your first/main nvme SSD to go big.

I seem to recall that NVME drives can use more power than SATA drives, or at least that was the case with some drives. If it's just for storage and there's little to zero price difference, I'd get the lowest power drive.

Thanks all, i reckon ill just get a relatively cheap nvme for my second slot. While it doesn’t make much design in games yet, i think that will start to change soon(ish)9 with direct storage.

I just wasn’t sure if sata drives were more reliable or something but it would appear not.
