You guys with 5000+BEs, do you know what your steppings are? For example: NAA9G 0743FAE

Is the stepping only on the cpu or is it printed on the box as well.
If it is on the box i will be able to tell you.

On the box too, the OPN above the SN (serial).

Mines a AD05 (B2 stepping), which I believe is one of the later batches. :)

I may be well out of date, But I think the reason for the O.P. confusion is this : There was a 6400 Black Edition Released. This has never included a heatsink. I've seen conflicting reports, but on balance, I think it comes with an unlocked multiplier. Very recently (last week in UK?) the standard version 6400 came out. It includes a heatsink but the multiplier is locked. Both run at a stock speed of 3.2 GHZ & have a 1mb cache.
Not all retailers may have done a good job of distinguishing between the two. Hence the confusion ?

I'd just struggle to see the point of anyone buying an AMD full stop atm when you consider the C2D's are faster and just as cheap...

I'm also at a loss as to why people would want to buy AMD over Intel at the moment.

If you already had an AM2 board and all set up, its much cheaper to swap cpu's than to buy a whole new setup.

The op said he was planning on building a gaming system around this CPU?

Also AM2+ offers a MUCH better upgrade path and is future proof for some time, AMD have pledged to support the board for up to 4 years with Quad and Tri-core CPUs!

Yeah that's if AMD are still in business in 4 years time lol, and lets face it how many people especially those on this forum honestly keep a mainboard for 4 years?

I was able to overclock this processor from 2.6 GHz to 3.0 GHz without adjusting the voltage and it is stable.

Hardly a massive overclock considering what the core 2's can achieve. You don't have to search hard just on these forums alone of people getting 4Ghz+ on old E6600's let alone the new wolfdale chips...

And finally check this review for a fairly in depth review of most of the recent dual core cpu's and tell me that AMD is the way forward......

If AMD go out of business its people like you and me that will suffer.
Without competition INTEL can then do what they like with prices.
Also having more than one company making cpus makes them all work harder to make better products.

The (non black) 6400+ is slightly quicker than an e6750 stock vs stock, for slightly less money, though the 6750 is quicker in most games (which mostly don't need the extra speed anyway). Doesn't seem like an awful choice when over-clocking isn't in the picture. Admittedly, the greater energy efficiency of the Core 2 Duo would make me recommend one when building from scratch in the mid to high end but even now, it's hardly like the AMDs are way behind.

Yes i know this, I was only kidding hence the lol, I'm no fanboy like a lot of people on here and I'd love to see AMD do well and give Intel a run for it's money. But the simple fact of the matter is that they're not at the moment.

Hopefully this will change in the near future but it's really not looking great for them.

Why would you get a 6750 anyway?? surely a wolfdale chip now, Did you even read this review? And even if AMD were not way behind they are still behind whether you like it or not, And why would anyone want to purchase something thats second best?

While a Core 2 setup is my personal preference, I think it's important to respect people's choices. Some people just prefer to stick with AMD, regardless of whether or not Intel is a better choice. Brand loyalty is not something I'd base a CPU purchase on, but if someone wants to get an Athlon 64 it's entirely their choice and it's hardly a crap chip.

In short what I'm trying to say is that there's no need to steer someone's thread totally off-topic because they've chosen a different CPU manufacturer.

Hardly steering completely off topic by comparing the ops choice of cpu to intels offerings, merely giving the op and some of the other posters some facts that they may not have come accross, is this not what discussion threads are for?

If I've offended someone for pointing out some facts then I do apologise.:(

Given that the Core 2s have been out for over a year and a half now, I think everyone is quite aware what they're capable of :) It's pretty much impossible to find any AMD related thread on this forum without someone mentioning Core 2 in it.

Me, I only just upgraded from an Athlon XP to a 6400BE, had my old setup for 4 years or longer. Not everyone has the finances to buy all the new toys that come out.

I stuck with AMD because I had good results with my old system plus when Phenom/Tri core are perfected I can just swap the CPU in my AM2+ board.

Oh, to OP def no heatsink in box, but then it's already been said.
