Any Artists Here?

I'd also suggest that people don't think that a book will teach them to draw well.

You obviously havn't heard of Betty Edwards book, heres a typical example the pic on the left is someone drawing themselves by looking in the mirror, the one on the right is them trying again after reading the book.

Probably a fairly extreme and non-typical example, and I highly doubt the person made that drawing, sat, read the book, then immediately drew that one. You can read a book on just about anything and expect it to help, if you're commited enough. But nothing beats just sitting down with pencils and paper and just drawing. You're allowed to make bad drawings, all practice is good.

Meh, pencils..schmencils!

If you can draw, you can draw with anything. Some of my best sketches have been on the cardboard of an empty A4 pad using an old biro.

This is absolutely true but when I started High School back in 69 I was so bad at drawing that I regulary got caned for it because the teacher thought I was messing about.
The first drawing I got caned for was a helicopter.
Even my drawings now are like matchstick men and animals usually consist of two oval circles with matchsticks for legs.

Probably the last thing I drew, I used a propelling pencil, one of those plastic Bic ones. Took under 10 minutes as it was only done quickly for a joke.

I do enjoy drawing but for some reason I don't do it very often.

I just get standard pencils from WHSmiths, including their water colour ones...versatile. I suppose they are not that great (and I am a bit rubbish, only got a C at AS) but a few samples done some 5 years ago. Derwent and Faber both good.

Gord^ like the car...smooth; i prefer mine "rougher".

Random sketch I done quite a while ago, just using some cheap HB iirc. I have just ordered a little set of derwent stuff though with a sketch book from ebay :)

Cell shaded version of that pic, haven't drawn anything for ages though.
