Any games on the horizon worth upgrading for?

Current rig: C2D 2180oc'ed to 3GHz, Radeon 3850, 4GB RAM.

So pretty outdated, feel like I deserve an upgrade, but I find it hard to justify it. I don't get enough time to play games, so I usually get round to playing something around 2 years after it comes out...

My system can chew up nearly all console ports without effort. The only exceptions were Burnout Paradise, where I had to turn off the blingy lighting to get a smooth 60FPS (it still ran fine even with them, but it looks better when it's ultra-smooth), Saints Row 2 (which was a horribly bad port anyway), and GTA4.

As far as PC-only games go, the only one i'm playing currently that could really use a bit more oomph is APB, and I find it difficult to justify an upgrade for just one game... Other games I'm likely to play in the near future are Dragon Age and STALKER (both of which I bought like 2 months ago in the Steam sales and haven't got round to playing yet). I'm pretty sure Dragon Age will run as smooth as butter, not sure about STALKER though.

Unreleased stuff I'm looking forward to is DNF, the new NFS game (if there's gonna be a PC version), DA2, Rage, Fallout: New Vegas and GW2. All of them are a while away except NFS and that's gonna be a console port, so I'll probably be ok even on my current rig.

So the question is, any games I'm not aware of that are coming out before Christmas and will run like dogs on my current system? Anything that'll morally justify my upgrading will do! :D

i know im looking forward to the new hitman and also doom 4, not sure about doom 4 but im sure your rig will play the new hitman as it will probably turn out to be a console focused game.

Yeah quite a few - they're on the horizon behind you though, not in front :) You could really do with an upgrade for stuff like Crysis.

Maybe consider a gfx upgrade (GTX460) and then do the rest of the system at a later point.

Crysis??? I don't think my system would even handle Far Cry at the highest settings! :D

Seriously, I still haven't even played Bioshock, even though I bought it at launch! :p I'm still trying to finish HL2 ep. 2, and the only multiplayer FPS I'm playing right now is Quake Live! :D

The games I'm looking forward to most of those I mentioed are Rage, which runs on an iPhone, and Guild Wars 2, which will probably have very low system specs, being an MMO, so you see why I need the forum's help finding an excuse for an upgrade! :p

Best to upgrade when you need to, not before.
Also around the time something is released, new hardware might be out and then it would be better off waiting then.

True, but if there's anything near the horizon i can reap the benefits of it now :p

-Okay so there's a game coming out in 2/3months that is system requirement heavy, you buy the current best or near best graphics card.
-Games about to come out and a new graphics card is out.

Problem!

Save and wait :D

I see it this way, if the games you want to play are unplaybale and the current games you are playing are playbale but you would like to turn the settings up to actually make the game look better, then the upgrade path is for you, but if you are happy with what you have and dont want to turn the settings up then stay with what you have.

I seriously think a 460 would be throttled by my CPU btw)

It would be but if you have a large monitor and crank up the res/aa it won't have such an impact. The vast majority of games are GPU limited at high resolution (ignoring the likes of GTA4, SupCom etc) and a 3850 is definitely holding back a 3ghz C2D.

That's the problem right there for me: I *would* like to turn the settings up in my current games a bit, but not enough to make me spend the money - and there isn't a single game I'm playing now that NEEDS a better card - Rage might, but that's at least a year away. That's why I asked if there's anything coming in the next 2-3 months that might be GPU-intensive, to find an excuse to spend the money now!:p
