Hey, ive just brought a new set up and this is my first build. Ive got a e8400 on am asus p5k pro board. Problem is i got it to post and into bios the first time no problem but got a warning that i needed to update to support the cpu. I had to go out then so i decided to turn it off and come back to it later. However since ive come back it just doesnt post. All the fans speed up and the drives start but there are no beeps and the screen is blank. Ive checked all the connections and theyre all fine. Any ideas on *** to do?

Cheers for the reply, i tried resetting the CMOS but to no avail. However i only moved the jumper for like 10 seconds like the instructions recommended. Is it worth doing it for longer? i didnt know if it would cause any adverse effects.

Na, it won't course any adverse effects.
Hmm, do you any other CPU you can try, so at least you can chck your BIOS revision.

Afraid not im on my PS3 at the moment to write this

Gonna move the jumper for 5 mins i think, its a right pain tho my GFX sits over the battery

this is more or less exactly what happened to me.

i got a p5k pro the other day with an e8400.

the bios update message came up, i went to flash the bios, but my usb drive didn't show up so i escaped the utility and it switched itself off.

after that exactly the same as you, everything spins up, but nothing further happens.

i have rma'd my board.

seems you have to flash the bios straight away or it borks your motherboard?

edit, by the way there is a 701 bios out now.

Yer im thinking of sending it back. ive looked around on the net and it seems like this is a pretty common problem with the P5K range. I just took everything out and put it back piece by piece. Never posted once. Mite get Abit board seem to have good reviews

i hope it doesn't start working again when you put a non wolfdale cpu in, otherwise my RMA'd board is going to work fine for them, and I'll have to give them more money to send it back, and it still won't work for me.
Maybe I can get them to put the new bios on it for me if that is the case.

Stupid system if it only gives you 1 chance to update the bios.

Crap I have just bought a e8400 and a p5k (non pro) :x. Will have to be extremely carefull, if you guys manage to get it working let us know, I'm sure it'll come in handy when I bork it (my luck).

put the latest bios on a usb flash drive and make sure you plug it in before turning the power on. go straight into the ezflash utility through the bios and upgrade and you should be fine.

or if you have access to another socket 775 cpu, put that in first and upgrade the bios, then put your e8400 in would be safest.

To be honest ive been messing around this afternoon with it and im thinking its something to do with the memory. putting no sticks in gets a no memory post but soon as i put a stick in it messes up again

I hate to prey for information on other peoples misfortune, but what memory is it you have :p? I've just bought the exact same cpu / motherboard as you, and am now feeling slightly paranoid about the arrival on tuesday.

doubt it's the memory if it didn't happen first time.
I would suspect it's just that it checks for memory v. early on in the boot process, and the problem that stops it working comes a bit later - hence if you create a memory problem it will pick that up first.

could be wrong.
