Been offered a new shift pattern at work, not sure weather to take it or not.

I currently work 5am-12pm Sunday to Thursday.

Im getting offered 10pm-7am Friday-Monday. So 4 on 3 off.

Will earn me a few extra hundred per month. But practicaly loose my weekends

Is it for everyone?
It worries me incase i cannot get used to it and then stuck with it.

Any tips? :o

Don't do it.
Even the people who can cope reasonably well are still screwed up.
It should be view as an absolutely last resort which is as bad as smoking.

At least it's pemanent nights though, so can get some sort of pattern going.

And weekends screw up social life as well.

I used to do it, 3am till 10am it will **** you for life.

Night work is funny when you coming home and every one is going to work.

Social life? Forget it you out in the sticks and trying to find one... lol :p

Damm! hoping you guys wouldnt say those kind of things! haha

Not that i have much of a weekend anyway, most friends work weekends aswell, and the Mrs works different days each week, and no kids.

Did/do you guys go to bed straight away after work or stay up till 2/3ish then bed, up at 8pm, beakfast then work?

U wot m8?!

Pretty much straight away, but if TV and gone.

You'll feel terrible you'll be tiered. Even when you get "used" to it. It's not that you're better, your just use to feeling terrible.
Read up on the reams of research that show how bard it is for you, and how many years of your life you will lose by dying early.

If everything goes to plan 14 more months and I'm out of doing such shifts,

Worked nights for 4-5 years just over a year ago. 9pm - 7am was my shifts,

I wouldn't do it again pretty much no life. Even when you're off all you want to do is sleep the money wasn't too bad but it isn't too great on your health working nights after a while.

If you mean when coming in from nights, mostly straight to bed. With only having to do work two nights, it's easier for me.

Your first night is always the killer one, my second is my last and that gets me through.

What's not clear?
The research shows how bad it is. Pretty much everyone feels terrible on such a shift pattern, getting used to it. Doesn't solve the issues, you are just used to feeling terrible.

There is a very very very small minority it might suit, but they are rare.

night shifts never agreed with me always felt like a zombie , doing 4 days split now but the company thinks 4 days is too much so we are going onto 4 days wk1 3 days wk 2 then repeat

I used to stay up for a couple of hours to unwind then hit the sack when I did 8 hour shift nights.
I've changed my job since and work more than 8 hours a night so just hit the sack straight away but I work Monday to Friday nights.
And........
Yes!
Nights mess you up!!

I was poking fun at your comment, 'Even the people who can cope reasonably well are still screwed up.'

Its called wind down time, a few of the lads went to boozer at 11am have a few pints and crash.

I didn't drink then so it was a nightmare for me.

Problem I have now at 43 is, if I don't drink I can stay up for 3-4 days solid and its really not good for you.

I would not recommend night shifts to anyone. But if it pays the bills go for it. ;)

Can't recommend it personally - did nights for awhile many years ago definitely had a significant negative impact on me personally. Spent the last few years on afternoon through to late evening shifts and while not as negative health wise found them hugely demoralising (dunno what it is but being at work at 10-11pm is a real downer).

Currently on 6-7am starts and while no fun getting going in the morning my general feeling of well being is another order of magnitude compared to the last few years.

EDIT: On the flip side though you might find it really works for you.

Kenny, just noticed you start at 5am Sunday anyway? You have no Saturday night with that start time.

Thats not really the case. You can still go out and to a reasonable time, you just can't get slaughtered. You can still very much have a Saturday evening social life starting at that time. Work sat nights, you can't even go to the cinema or out for a meal, round a mates house to watch a film. Or 98% of other social activities that don't involve getting slaughtered till 3am.
